Movie Ratings and Reviews

Terminator Salvation

Surprisingly solid entry in the Terminator series. Effects were excellent, and covered for some pretty big holes in the plot.

X-Men Origins - Wolverine

Pretty good, especially after the horrific mess that was X-Men 3. Action scenes and acting are all quite good. Part of the ending is less than satisfying because it feels like a cop-out.

The God Who Wasn't There

Some great ideas regarding faith, and the lack of critical thinking applied to religion by it's believers, but the film also misses the mark a little bit too. The director makes himself too much the star of the show.

Very faithful adaptation of one of the greatest books ever written.

One of my favorite horror flicks from the eighties, Dolls is gory and darkly hilarious!

Wickedly funny movie that asks believers to defend their reasons for believing things that cannot be proven. Is it fair? Not always. Is it entertaining? Definitely.

High Tension (Switchblade Romance)

Slick French slasher flick with style to spare.

Surprisingly great fun! A big dumb action movie with no pretensions whatsoever. The most fun action movie I've seen in ages.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Putrid. The story is weak, and the songs are absolutely awful. A rare misstep for the Burton/Depp combo.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End

Fun ending to a fun movie series. A couple plotlines don't get wrapped up very satisfactorily though.

Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man 3(2007)

Decent, but the black suit story was condensed so much that it made very little sense. Why did Venom need to be in this again?

Marie Antoinette

Gorgeously filmed and well acted. The anachronistic songs aren't as much of a distraction as I assumed they would be.

I swear I wasn't going to see this. From the moment I heard that Michael Bay was doing it, I decided that it was going to be awful. I heard really good things from someone who's opinion I trust though, and decided to give it a chance. I'm really glad I did. Story-wise, it's far from perfect, but c'mon, what do you really expect from a movie based on toys that were popular 20 years ago. The action sequences are nothing short of amazing, and you should definitely catch it while it's still on the big screens.

Quite possibly the funniest movie ever made. Most of the humor still holds up today, with a good bit of it that would not get past the MPAA any longer.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

Epic story of how the greatest band in history came to be. :)

The Haunting
The Haunting(1963)

A classy and classic Ghost Story, this movie has been imitated often, but never topped. If you love ghost stories, this is an absolute must-see!

The Orphanage

This an absolutely classic ghost story, with the emphasis on story. Beautifully shot, it gets under your skin and stays with you, unlike the "jump" scares in most American made horror films these days.

Burn After Reading

Very quirky and funny! Brilliantly written and acted.

A Tale of Two Sisters

This is a movie that gets better and better upon repeat viewings. The story is incredibly well crafted, and the movie stays with you after you've watched it.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Great movie! Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks are wonderful together. One of Kevin Smith's best!

Repo! The Genetic Opera

Tons of fun! Great songs and outstanding visuals. The cast is great- even Paris Hilton.

The Bourne Ultimatum

Outstanding spy thriller and a great way to wrap up the Bourne series.

Live Free or Die Hard

Fun popcorn action flick. There are some absolutely impossible stunts, but c'mon, this is John McClane!

An incredibly silly movie with a nonexistant plot, awful acting, and boring repetitive action scenes. It looks like a history lesson produced by the WWE.

Really raunchy, yet with a surprisingly sweet and honest side too. This is a great comedy that really earns it's R. And yes, Mclovin absolutely steals the show.

One of the worst movies I've seen; this is little more than a Lifetime movie with a bigger budget and a few stars. I disliked it already, but the incredibly lame "twist" ending had me looking for something to throw at the screen. Booooo!

Bridge to Terabithia

Worth seeing, though it feels like something is missing from it emotionally. The performances are all fine, and the CGI doesn't really detract from the story like I had worried it might. I can't quite put my finger on what's wrong, but I just didn't connect to the story the way I did when I was a kid.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

More entertaining than it has any right to be, almost entirely because of the presence of Sung Kang as Han. In a movie that's supposed to be all about "cool," he's really the only one that pulls it off effortlessly.

Thoroughly enjoyable movie that is fun from beginning to end! The cast is superb, and the songs are all very well done. If you want to leave the theater smiling, this one is for you.

Highly entertaining adventure movie. Whatever your thoughts about Mel Gibson, he proves he is very talented here.

Pan's Labyrinth

Absolutely gorgeous dark fantasy film with some truly beautiful/disturbing imagery. A must-see.

Hot Fuzz
Hot Fuzz(2007)

Absolutely brilliant! Perfectly skewers the "buddy cop" action movie, while simultaneously providing thrills on the same level as one. If you loved Shaun of the Dead, then this one is a must see!

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter

Fun, campy flick that is wrong on so many levels. Deserves to be a cult classic.

Jesus Camp
Jesus Camp(2006)

If this movie doesn't scare you half to death, then you need to stop drinking the kool-aid. What's being done to these children goes beyond mere brainwashing, and ventures into child abuse. Everyone should see this movie, particularly moderate Christians, to see what's growing on the fringes of their faith. Excellent.

X-Men: The Last Stand

The third installment in the series is so terrible that it almost ruins the first two movies for me. Absolutely awful- I wish I hadn't watched it.

White Noise
White Noise(2005)

Weak, lame, and not scary in the least. The plot is a bunch of paranormal mumbo jumbo that elicits unintentional laughter instead of chills. Skip it.

Boring, predictable, and not scary in the least.

The Da Vinci Code

Dreary adaptation that removes the more "controversial" bits from the book and dumbs down the female lead- which is pretty ironic given the book's message.

The Hot Chick

Incredibly stupid, but has some funny bits. Plus Anna Faris is always watchable.

The Matrix Reloaded

It turns out Zion isn't worth saving after all. Nice dance sequence losers.

Gone in 60 Seconds (Gone in Sixty Seconds)

I admit it. I liked it more than I thought I would. It's still big screen junk food, but it's never boring.

Empire Records

A great example of everything that was wrong with the 90s.

Charlie's Angels

Gets an extra star just for the freakout that is Crispin Glover. Otherwise, this is a steaming pile.

Gibson may be batshit insane, but he's really fun to watch in this revenge flick.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Wins points for an over-the-top Alan Rickman, but loses all those points and more with Costner's terrible accent and the Brian Adams song.

Father of the Bride

Horribly unfunny comedy- yet another waste of Steve Martin.

DePalma gets absolutely everything right in this one. One of the few great adaptations of a Stephen King novel.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Who the hell wanted to see badass Vader as a sickeningly cute kid called Ani?

Enjoyable western already, but Kilmer absolutely knocks it out of the park as Doc Holiday.

The Princess Bride

An absolute classic- works as both a satire of swashbuckling romances and a great movie in that genre in it's own right.

The Fisher King

One of my favorite movies! Brilliantly bizarre, funny, and heartbreaking in places with an excellent cast and jaw-dropping visuals. A must see!

Over the Hedge

Thouroughly enjoyable animated flick that is very funny. Shatner and Carell are the biggest standouts.

Complete garbage- yet another movie that is completely style over substance. It gets one star only because Christopher Walken and Tom Waits show up in small roles.

Dawn of the Dead

Completely misses the point about what makes zombie movies scary by turning the walking dead into track stars like in 28 Days Later.

Shaun of the Dead

Extremely funny and a surprisingly good zombie horror movie in it's own right.

This is another wickedly funny satire from Mike Judge that was unfairly dumped by the studios. So many signs point to our "dumbing down" happening much faster than the 500 years it takes in this movie. Be very afraid.

This is a brutally funny black comedy that is the perfect antidote to years of sappy teen movies. It perfectly nails society's idolization of teen angst.

The Haunting
The Haunting(1999)

I wish I could give it zero stars. They butchered absolutely everything good in the book and in the earlier film version and replaced it with crappy CGI.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Abysmal dreck that thought it was much more clever than it was. Kilmer is the only good thing about it.
