Movie Ratings and Reviews

There Will Be Blood

The acting was great, nice scenery, but there's no story there at all. I can't se any reason why they bothered to make this film.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

if you've never seen it, DO NOT RENT IT! To enjoy this movie you must go see it live.

MOre science than your usual sci-fi film, but what do you expect from a Carl Sagan story? Not great as an adaptation of the book, but judged on its own merits it is a fine, thought-provoking film.

Deep Impact
Deep Impact(1998)

The plot synopsis listed on this site really shortchanges this one. It goes a little farther than your basic disaster movie in developing characters. Unlike other films in the genre, the big disaster is not the point of the movie, it is the background that the character's stories are set against.

This movie is mindless and shallow. The f/x were impressive, but that's all I have nice to say about it.

Shallow Grave

After I had seen Trainspotting and 28 Days

This Is Spinal Tap

This is a brilliantly concieved and executed film. Unfortunately I can only give it five stars, but we all know that "This goes up to eleven".

Man of the Century

This one is intensely charming. A simple idea that is pulled off rather well.

I have never watched a single episode of Firefly, and after watching this movie, I can't figure out why. Good pacing, good action, and quite funny. This was much more entertaining than I thought it would be.

V for Vendetta

A truly crappy adaptation of the source material. I may be rating it too harsly on it's merits as a film, but I haven't been this disgusted with an adaptaion since BloodWork.

Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

This is one that's as good as it's reputation

The Party
The Party(1968)

Peter Sellers as one of the most annoying characters in film history, I wanted to strangle him in this one...but that's part of the charm

The Transporter

Not a lot of story to it, but still a very good action film.

One of the great SF films ever, and also a great suspense film

Big Trouble
Big Trouble(2002)

Far more entertaining than I thought it would be

Beyond the Mat

Really quite a good documentary, it is informative and honest

An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn

many movies have been made about making movies, including many satires. This stands out among that group as being particularly good.

Blood Work
Blood Work(2002)

I couldn't stand this one. It is one of the worst book adaptations I've ever seen. They chage MAJOR plot elements, turn a minor character into a major one jsut because a high profile actress got the part, and even changed the identity of the killer. Then they put some clues that a blind moron could see but the main charater somehow can't in there...I got fed up with this and stopped watching halfway through. I think it an absolute waste of a good cast.

El Mariachi
El Mariachi(1993)

I had heard good things about this movie before i saw it, but I think the movie surpassed all the compliments I heard. An interesting revenge story, and Rodriguez' directing is absolutely brilliant. His visual style is established in this film.

Bugsy Malone
Bugsy Malone(1976)

Very silly, but a lot of fun to watch.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

It has nowhere near the charm of the first movie in the series.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

I was never really that interested in seeing this one, it looked like nothing special. My brother told me I HAD to see it, and I thak him immensely for it. Not exactly a parody of Film Noir, more like a stepchild of Noir and general Black Comedy, it had me laughing all the way through so much that I was crying and my stomach hurt. Kilmer and Downey need to team up again on another movie, they were a brilliant pairing.

From Dusk Till Dawn

This movie has no right to be as entertaining as it is. There's nothing about it that's really original, but Robert Rodriguez's directing is always fun to watch.

Reservoir Dogs

Very much an unforgettable Film. I don't think tarrantino has ever done anything better. the acors work so well off each other, it was great

Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction(1994)

One of the most quotable movies ever, but please, get the quotes right if you do.

I loved Planet Terror and all the short previews and interlude pieces. this Clearly show the love affair these directors have for movies in general, and the kind of throwaway exploitation movies they grew up on in particular. Death Proof was totally forgettable, though, and I might never watch it again when I buy the DVD.

I was never excited about watching this one, when I finally saw it, I was not that impressed. Nice costumes and stunts, but a forgettable movie overall.

I might rate it higher if I remembered it better, but I haven't seen it throughsince I was a kid, and not at all in at least 10 years.

American Pie
American Pie(1999)

An above average example of the genre. Many good laughs, but nothing that made me want to watch the sequels.

I've never watched it all the way through. Seems okay, but I don't understand the hype.

Fun, good action sequences and f/x. The casting worked pretty welll, I thought.

Donnie Darko
Donnie Darko(2001)

A few people recommended this one to me, and now I want revenge against them for freaking me out so severely. It is one of the strangest thing I've ever watched, ranking up there with Being John Malkovich and Cemetary Man. That said, it was a well done film, and worth seeing if you can handle material that is just way out there.

Sin City
Sin City(2005)

I was in love with this film from the first two seconds I saw of a commercial for it. Beautifully shot, it looks so much like a Frank Miller book that I almost wanted to be fliping pages as I watched it. There are few movies I have ever enjoyed more completely.

The Incredibles

I wasn't impressed by the story at all, but I thought the animation was some of the most excellent I've ever seen. I don't particularly care for the body styles they used, but the motion and the backgrounds were beautifully rendered.

Ocean's Eleven

Clooney and Pitt play off each other so well that the simplistic script doesn't seem to matter much. A totally different kind of movie than the Rat pack original, and quite fun in its own way.

Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman(1990)

Not really very interesting. Neither Gere nor Roberts played a character worth caring about. The only character in the entire movie that I cared about was Hector Elizondo's.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

If I was still 7, I would rate it much higher, but having watched it again, I don't think it holds up that well. Entertaining, but not really a great movie.

The Ring
The Ring(2002)

A very different feel for a horror film than most American movies, it kind of makes me want to see the japanese film it was based on, also.

The Matrix
The Matrix(1999)

Great look to this film, and an interesting dystopian vision. I thought it was very good, but not quite great

Bruce Almighty

Not a particularly interesting idea for a film, not a particularly good script, not a good movie

Very well done film, Mel Gibson is the biggest bad-ass he's been since The Road Warrior

There's Something About Mary

An extremely quotable movie, a lot of fun to see even more than once

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

A thoroughly entertaining bit of swashbuckling

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

Funny movie, many memorable lines

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Very nice F/X and an abbsolutely briliant adaptation of the book. I've rarely seen good books done justice when presented on screen, but this wa great.
