Detroit (2017)

I got the chance to see this at the Alamo Drafthouse where they had a pre-show that was themed after Motown and showed you various music clips and trivia that put me in a good mood. I wish I could have watched that preshow at the end of the movie, because this film sucked the life out of me. Any time a character walks on screen and performs a good deed you think "Oh thank god, someone in this movie has a soul."

Dunkirk (2017)

Has more in common with Battleship Potemkin than with Saving Private Ryan.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

For me, The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series is the perfect adaptation of Spider-Man, but this does come very close. It reinvents the character in a way that makes him fit perfectly into the Marvel cinematic universe. All the characters and their teenager-ness are a joy to watch, and Michael Keaton is a bad mother fucker. The only reason I am giving a 3 star rating instead of a 4 or 5 is because I'm not sure about some aspects of the character and lore they have had to re-invent and how that is going to work itself out in future installments. I do want to eventually see MJ, Gwen, Harry, J Jonah, and Green Goblin again in a Spider-Man movie, but Marvel probably doesn't feel enough time has passed between now and the old movies.
