Very French New Wave-y, but it also has a distinctly German feel to it. Yesterday Girl was very important to establishing German as an artistic cinematic power. The movie itself is very well shot and acted.
Entertainingly profane and violent. Miller and company do a great job at injecting some much needed heart between the bicycle chain decapitation and masturbation jokes, but the film can't fully overcome the "been there done that" feeling of its plot and structure.
Christopher Nolan walks the tightrope between intellectual auteur and mainstream action director better than anyone currently working today. Inception is dense and deep, daring to challenge its audience in ways that not many other films dare. It's not necessarily a perfect film. Like many other Nolan films, i find he has a little bit of trouble pacing the third act, and I found the very end to be a bit of a cop out, but those things don't matter in the big scheme of things. When a film is this fiercely original, you take notice and give it the credit it deserves.
While Jack Benny was never much of an actor, he was a fantastic comedian, and To Be or Not to Be is arguably his best work. Every scene is a textbook example of great set up and brilliant comedic timing. The best satire is the one that says what needs to be said, even if people aren't quite ready to hear it, and that is why the film has stood the test of time as well as it has.
