Wow, the world loves this movie. A 7.9 on imdb and 89% on rotten tomatoes. At first, I thought I was going to have to turn it off. Along with the hard German sounds, even the subtitles looked cheap, and it just felt over the top in the first few minutes. Turned into a pretty cute little movie.
It's your basic story: street vendor girl likes teacher, sells teacher ring with promise of romantic certainty, teacher meets girl to fulfill certainty then tries to travel across Europe and Asia to meet her. Just so happens that street vendor rides with him, and yadda yadda a bunch of other things that could never possibly happen but make for an okay story.
If there is a strike against the movie, it's the unbelievability factor. Teacher runs across a seemingly crazed murderer at start of film and the movie plays out as teacher tells murderer his story. Murderer turns out to be pretty cool guy and his girl just happens to be the one teacher is trying to meet. Not only is this ridiculous, but each time the two leads run into one another, those odds are quite small as well. In other words, this story could never possibly happen, but the fact that it does and does so without suspending too much believe is probably a large part of the movie's charm. Hell, by the end, even those cheap looking subtitles are charming.
This was a very, very bizarre movie. It's been a while since I watched it but I can remember a lot of it because it is a unique movie. I cannot recall quite what the gal's issue was, but it's fairly horrific. That said, it's not a horror movie. More romance than horror. At times I think it tries to be a little scary but it is in no way plausible and I think that makes it less scary. It's one of the oddest movies I was actually able to enjoy.
Been a while since I watched this so a bit hard to remember everything. I remember Clement giving us a very likable character who is still struggling with heartbreak from his wife. It seemed like a pretty accurate portrayal of how hard it can be to move on. I'm sure the story has been told many times, but Clement brings that likability and it's just a nice watch.
Movies like this can easily turn ridiculous. This one more or less does that, and I fully expected that. Plenty of special effects and all that so focus on that and not the story.
