Fails more often than it works, which is unfortunate, since there is obviously a lot of heart behind the idea.
How the FUCK did I not know about this movie until now? Whereas Hollywood has been making a killing over the last several years on movies based on dance, gymnastic, cheerleading, marching band, etc. competitions, they always go overboard on the plot. Maybe so the audience doesn't have to feel stupid for their guilty love of watching other people excel at bodily movements they can never achieve from a La-Z-Boy with a huge tub of popcorn on their laps?
Whatever the reason, I always got fed up with those lame over-plotted excuses to watch people dance. Breakin' has no excuses. Nope. Not even one. God bless it for that. Neither I nor the filmmakers had to be embarrassed that we love watching various 80s styles of dance and couldn't give less of a shit about the plot if we tried.
Well, stuff exploded and shit, which is what I wanted to see. Not sure if it surpasses the ridiculous appeal of The Day After Tomorrow, but it certainly tried. After awhile, it's over-the-topness became redundant, but while it was still new, it was hilarious and fun.
My inner intellectual is weeping as I write this.
I feel like this movie should have slowed itself down a little bit. At times it was effective to have a lot of information rattled off quickly and then suddenly come to a halt, but overall I think I wasted energy trying to follow minuscule facts instead of emotionally engaging. Definitely an emotional story, but if it had just taken a few more deep breaths, I would have been weeping instead of merely tsking.
Definitely worth watching, though.
This movie ruled, as long as your expectations for it were appropriate. STILL, an obvious low rating is what it deserves.
