Manny's Review of Broken City
Yet another in a long line of Hollywood duds in 2013. Broken City has great actors mired in cliches and contrivance. What's worse is the movie thinks its something a lot more special than it is. Mark Wahlberg is Billy Taggart, a New York cop forced into resignation after a controversial shooting, but Mayor Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe) has him fully covered. He hires Billy, now working as a private investigator, to cath the missus (Catherine Zeta-Jones) in the act of adultery. What seems simple at first becomes a nasty web of political corruption. Director Allen Hughes, directing solo without his brother Albert (the both made the great Menace II Society) is completely distracted by a stale, overeager script from newcomer Brian Tucker that switches mood with little regard for credulity. Wahlberg is at least solid, but its not enough to lift this turd. Better than Crowe who sounds ridiculous with his New Yawk accent, and looks even worse in a horrid wig and tan. It's not the city here that's broken.
