David's Review of The Sessions
A brilliant performance from Hawkes as a sufferer of polio and a brave one from Hunt as his sexual therapist lift this film from too much Hollywood cliche. The fact that it's based on a true story and its central character suffers from a severe disability suggests to me that the film-makers had one eye on this years Oscars but maybe that's me just be a little cynical! However the script is witty and the scenes between Hunt and Hawkes especially possess a reality to them that means that the film is not titilating but honest. I'm not sure if Hawkes will win an Oscar for his performance (in another year he might) but it is a great acting turn, which is saying something considering the fact that he can only work with his face in the film!
