This film questions what it is to be free, and does a magnificent job of being non-judgmental. In addition, Mona is an interesting and more complex character than she initially appears to be. Varda's excellent composition and extremely fluid camera movements are something to marvel at as well.
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Don't be fooled by the "cast" on the poster. At least 2 of the characters depicted didn't make the final cut of the movie (and I use that term loosely). The jokes simply fell flat because they had no context. The thought process must have been "lets take what people wouldn't expect to happen, yet make it so obvious that it doesn't fit". It makes me sick to my stomach that I contributed to the opening weekend box office sales of this movie. I only went because I was bored by sitting around doing nothing...I won't make that mistake twice.
