Amy Middleby's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

Jurassic World

I would have given it 4 stars but there should have been more female characters... Infant Owen should have been Olivia and Claire should have been a Clive. Enjoyable action that is clever and nostalgic.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Not a pleasant world to visit, but an extraordinary one to watch.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Perfect sequel in a trilogy... The story builds...

Unfortunately on paper Louie's life looked more interesting then when it actually was seen on screen. The most interesting part of this film was the unexpected (radio offer) and made the rest seem already done and done better.

Still Alice
Still Alice(2015)

Lovely to see Moore on screen.

The Imitation Game

Coded with oscar prerequisites

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Battles with five armies... All in the title. Nothing more and nothing less.

I just watched a mesmerising dream....

The Theory of Everything

There's something about this movie that doesn't really offer anything new. It was always going to be an "award" contender and you know it before even seeing it which is troublesome as the acting and script are top notch!

No character or plot progression. Disappointing. A character is more interesting if they go from good to bad or vice a versa... missed cat and mouse opportunities too.

American Teen

Memories of my youth come back... wanted and unwanted thoughts are wrapped up in them. Good thing it seems like such a blimp on the life radar.

Compelling viewing. Some scenes you just don't want to witness - like an awkward conversation you witnessed between a group of people with one person that doesn't quite fit in...

The Maze Runner

Not as bad as the usual YA flick... Not as good as it should be either...

The Book of Life

Beautiful design, story could be sharper...

Children of a Lesser God

Interesting subject matter, delicately done. Good film but not great.

St. Vincent
St. Vincent(2014)

Sadder than expected. Balanced performances between Murray and Lieberher make for heartfelt viewing.

Trading Places

Clever with a conscience

The horrors of war depicted with complex characters and situations. This movie doesn't seem to date however many movies have taken from it so contemporary viewing might feel odd.

The Interview

What you would expect with more laughs than you are lead to expect by the other reviews...

The Boxtrolls

I'm not really sure if this is actually for "all ages" - but I think everyone should see it at some age.

Our Town
Our Town(1940)

Charming. However in the 3rd part you really realise what a great stage production it would have been and it's translation to the screen doesn't really come off perfectly.

Lacking the stylish fun of a Besson film.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Not as bad as expected. But pretty lack lustre...

I've never seen a mystery/thriller where the big mystery is want exactly IS the mystery. Great direction with Laurence Olivier showing how well he can naturally keep the audience guessing.

Unique experience. A very clever and committed film

The Immigrant

Could have been a lot better...

Pretty bad but at a short running time and a clever approach to the "legend" it was rather enjoyable.

Strange how there is so much slightly off stuff to pick at in this movie but at the end of it Christopher Nolan offers again so much food for the mind and soul.

Not as bad as I thought... The 2011 novel has far too many parallels with The Hunger Games to feel original or a little special. Unfortunate because it's quite a fun film.

Gone Girl
Gone Girl(2014)

Great acting with a few illogical jumps in the writing.

The Monuments Men

So disappointing. Strangely paced, confused feel and completely lacking tension and focus.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Better than the first... Much unfortunately that's not saying much...

12 Years a Slave

Time will tell if this movie actually stays as good as everyone thought it was... I felt it was lazy... Easily manipulative with the subject matter but offers no insight or creativity in it's storytelling.

Magic in the Moonlight

Good but not great Allen heights of dialogue and substance. My biggest issue was the lack of chemistry between the two leads - the age difference being the jarring factor. Dare I say I believe the charming Emma Stone was badly miscast? Yup. She needed at least 15 years put on her.

First half boringly serious... Second half more fun.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Too dark for kids, too stupid for adults and too un appealing for teenagers... Pick an audience target and focus...

The Heat
The Heat(2013)

More fun than it's reputation indicates...

Not bad, but annoys when it never reaches its potential.

Iron Man 3
Iron Man 3(2013)

Not as fun as the first- not as bad the second- a fun film with only the introduction of Bruce Banner missing (didn't they leave together at the end of The Avengers??)

Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2(2010)

Not a great addition.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Fun.... Delving more and more into the marvel multi-verse. Enjoyed this dig more than Iron Man 2 & 3 but not as much as The Avengers and Captian Americas... Sitting securely in the middle of the marvel films which is still pretty high!

Burton And Taylor

There's a reason why people hope for drama in celebrity relationships...

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

Half an hour too long.... Lagged in bits, predictable in others which undermined all the great stuff it had going for it. The tense relationship between ape and human should have been the driving force - maybe the next one will pay off on the brief this one was meant to explore.

We Bought a Zoo

Pretty poor... Cameron Crowe - what have you done for me lately? Not much. Overrated director which is living on past "good films" well past even their expiry date...

The trailers made it look fresh, the movie was rotten. So many issues - the biggest being why waste so much time trying to explain such a dumb plot!! Richard Corliss' Time review says the rest well...

Probably only had 20 minutes left of this confused film. Word of advice - we need to be included on the protagonist's journey... Not confused by it.

Kill Your Darlings

I had never heard of Carr before... and this movie cleverly explains why he remained in the shadows of this interesting literary movement. His story had a very interesting beat.

The Grand Budapest Hotel

Classic Wes. The design and plot as quirky and clever as we have grown to expect with it's signature 2D look and feel.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Not as good as The Avengers but much better then the rest *cough*ironman2&3*cough* in the Marvel canon. Thoughtful and the fight sequences really pack a punch.

47 Ronin
47 Ronin(2013)

Sure it's wooden and badly written - but if you don't take it as seriously as it would like to be taken and look deeper into the fabulous Givenchy-ish costumes and sets it's a bit of fun.

The LEGO Movie

Fast and funny, imaginative and poignant without the delayed after effect of "damn that message was kinda twisted" (ie Frozen) - long live Lego and the imagination it sparks in young and old!

20 Feet From Stardom

The chance of it all seems the most though provoking idea this doco has to offer- it's about opportunity and a billion other things other than talent. A good life lesson on being content with doing what you love.

About Time
About Time(2013)

Better than most, fun yet heartfelt, thinking but not too much - fun Sunday fare

Lone Survivor

Terrible situation.... By the end all I could think about was the afghani civilians.

The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty

Be who you want to be - not who you think you are!

Enough Said
Enough Said(2013)

JLD is great. A new appreciation of Elaine.

Dallas Buyers Club

Only weak link is JG- she just doesn't have the raw believe-ability the rest of the cast holds.

Intelligent and beautifully filmed and designed. A filmic feast for body and soul.

The Bling Ring

Never really hits the mark. Maybe the problem stems from not know what mark to aim for.

Blue Jasmine
Blue Jasmine(2013)

Great characters, intelligent plot and flawless acting- this is basically screen storytelling at its finest.

American Hustle

Plot would have been nice- the characters weren't as interesting as I had hoped.

Saving Mr. Banks

Putting aside the fact this is a Disney corporate movie I feel Emma Thompson shone enlightening light on writers and their experience with adaptions of their seed.

Parts were better then the whole. The summer song being a highlight.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Can't wait for the next film. The middle of the story is at times a frustrating place to be but this film definitely doesn't suffer other "sequel" pitfalls, it lived up to expectation and entertained brilliantly.

Amazing. I would have liked less dialogue - in particular from Bullock- but overall mesmerising.

The Expendables

So bad it's not even bad-good. Not only does Sylvester's face have way too much Botox in a very distracting (scene stealing) way but every cliche that they bring up doesn't deserve more screen time. Sylvester she is too young for you- next time buy a car- your life crisis will be cheaper the rest of us won't have to see it.

Cloud Atlas
Cloud Atlas(2012)

I really liked it... Long and I took "breaks" - maybe not for everyone but it got underneath my skin and found it really interesting, entertaining and at times poignant.

McConaughey, Sheridan and Lofland are great leads, beautiful story- but could have been 30-40 minutes shorter.

Riddickulously fun. OFFOV (only for fans of Vin)

You will never go to a zoo or "marine park" again- and that's a good thing.

World War Z
World War Z(2013)

I really liked this. Entertaining and a pace and certain characters I found engaging.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

Not as bad as others - but still not good. The leads are charming- it's the story that let's it down

This director knows visual effects!

On the Road
On the Road(2012)

Riley and Hedlund give it their all- but this film just doesn't work. The language is on the page not on the screen and the magic therefore lost when the voice overs stop or lines muffled by the usually good Viggo and consistently bad Stewart.

Man of Steel
Man of Steel(2013)

Pretty bad- not as bad as the last. Fun in bits, lazy in others and down right irritating in others I was pretty disappointed.

The Great Gatsby

over produced but entertaining.

The Queen of Versailles

The horrible side of wealth- in all it's forms.

Star Trek Into Darkness

How sequels should be done- strong theme of the individual vs. the many and the essence of the characters all still solid.

Celeste and Jesse Forever

Nice but Jones seemed the odd one out in casting. Maybe if the good writer has more distance next time the overall feel would be better.

Side by Side
Side by Side(2012)

Anybody interesting in perception, visual methods and film techniques and theories need to watch this doco. Join in the debate!

The Sessions
The Sessions(2012)

John Hawkes is the gem. What a gentle portrayal of a paralysed life.

Pitch Perfect

Not perfect but loads of fun- Rebel Wilson cracked me up.

The Invisible War

I'm joining this conversation so it might become #notinvisable sooner - but unfortunately still not soon enough.

Anna Karenina

Disappointing. Uneven for many reasons. All aspects had good and bad things to mention- pity there's too many too.

Into The Abyss

The ex Captain of Death Row was heart breaking. The tale for all concerned was equally so.

Sleepwalk With Me

Good film. Great story.

De rouille et d'os (Rust and Bone)

Beautiful. Sad and real. Haunting characters and a side of French film making that ain't so rosy and should be shown more.

Ruby Sparks
Ruby Sparks(2012)

Stays with you- and you continue to think about how clever and real it actually was

Not as bad as Alien 4 Resurrection - and seeing as though terrible producers manipulated Fincher's vision that says a lot on how this movie still has good touches even if it's not in league with Alien and Aliens, but still much better then Alien 4 and Prometheus.

Hotel Transylvania

Really fun- so much better then you would expect. Beautiful character animation and a really fun story- with jokes for young and old.

The Master
The Master(2012)

Misses the mark. Wish that it has hit it. . . But everything seemed. . . Less. Lacked the emotional subtlety I was hoping for.

Oz the Great and Powerful

No magic. The film. . doesn't use potential witty moments (a wizard that doesn't have magic), makes the female sterotypical leads (conniving, jealous and pure) and plot inconsistent and left me needing a much better illusion of an okay film.

Silly and stupid. I laughed at the inappropriate moments but also had a rather big insight into where The Book of Mormon production came from. .

Lacks the emotional punch it intended. Sometimes you don't need to know why people are screwed up- sometimes you do - this was a case of needing to know but in the end not really caring- bad combo.

Silver Linings Playbook

Bit deeper then I thought it would be. Tender and true moments. Lovely film.

Pretty darn B grade. But the plot holes, bad CGI and basic plot make for a fun, if not stupid and silly also, pleasurable viewing.

Zero Dark Thirty

Not bad- just not terribly good either. Some dialogue scenes let it down- best moments come when no one says anything.

Django Unchained

A lot of fun out of tragic situations.

Life of Pi
Life of Pi(2012)

Very visually beautiful- glad I saw it in 3D. Had some great moments but all up Ang Lee still lacks the central emotive direction for me.

Better then I expected but still didn't really offer anything new. Disappointing seeing at though Hitch (and Alma) would never had made a film like this. Some good moments (Scarlett as Janet is fantastic) but overall I just wish it was a different type of picture.

Les MisÚrables

Unfortunately uneven. The two leads (Jackman and Crowe) unfortunately don't have the singing chops to warrant their scene time, in particular when compared to the amazing other voices.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Loved it. Story, pace, tension and laughs all beautifully balanced. Wish they were tying it all up in the next installment instead of stretching it to three but will actually have really high expectations for the following movies.

Wreck-it Ralph

might not have gotten all the VG references but the laughs I did get were goooood! Oooooorreeeeo!!

I've Loved You So Long

A tad too long- but it holds you and builds in absolute sadness. At moments you start to question why Juliette didn't tell anyone but then you get swept up again in her story and remember you're not writing it, and in control of other's pain at all.

Meek's Cutoff

A great painting- not so interesting movie, even little tension wasn't used properly.

First half amazing Bond film, after "the island capture" no longer a spy film but an action flick.

Searching for Sugar Man

Extraordinary story, extraordinary man- a real world poet that proves sales aren't all that important when true talent is present and that music is global therapy.

Love and Other Drugs

It has a very uneven tone- and not in a good way. The leads have chemistry and give solid performances but the plot and scenarios seemed exaggerated and unreal in many ways. I also found myself more interested in the pill industry and wished that that part was more developed- because something not quite right was happening with the rest of the movie.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Strangely engaging even if it's forgotten quickly.

This was better than Clash or Wrath of the Titans. Not brilliant, but definitely entertaining.

Sin Nombre
Sin Nombre(2009)

Liked not loved the film, the two leads were great even though it was Mexico itself that intrigued the most. What a complex country between the American Dream and all that is America de Sur.

Family Weekend

Saw this film at the Canberra International Film festival- the ghosting scene delays, maybe due to a slow output frame rate made it hard to watch- but the film sadly has more then just technical difficulties. Are you going to be a Freak or not? I was hoping you were. Oh and please don't change the title to Family Weekend. Queen Freak might not be a great film- but that title implies some substance at least!

In Time
In Time(2011)

Incredible concept, best futuristic idea in awhile- some terrible lines make it somewhat fall towards the rotten side of ratings though.

Killing Them Softly

Direction and cinematography was a visual delight. Frankie (McNairy) made the dialogue feel like natural poetryl- all of this should have made the movie great, but it wasn't.

Mirror Mirror

Pretty fun actually. Better then it's rival Snow White and the Huntsman. Proper mix of humour and schmaltz with a lovely young lead.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits

Disappointing story but fab animation. Somehow the plot makes you daydream on other things, but the animation stops you from turning the channel.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Can't believe I'm saying this, but I preferred the Tobey M first flick. Missed opportunities on a movie that is unsure itself on why it was made.

Men in Black III

Better then you would think. Fun TV flick to watch on a Tuesday or on a plane.

Would like to see the stage version of this movie. The movie doesn't hit hard enough for such incredible material- basically a disappointment.

Seven Psychopaths

Great writing- a fan of Martin, both on and off the screen.

Potentially great, but in the end lacking - the motivations of all the characters are very unclear.

The Book of Eli

Could hold the key for the survival of man? Well if you believe it is such an item- this movie might be for you. If not- uneven acting, unbelievable premise and the tension that should be there isn't as menacing as it should be. Go see The Road instead.

Characters and story richer, grittier and more entertaining then you would expect.

Black Swan
Black Swan(2010)

Stays with you- long after you've left the cinema.

I, Robot
I, Robot(2004)

Underrated. Subtle with a steady interesting pace.

Spider-Man 3
Spider-Man 3(2007)

So bad- TM dance sequence is plain embarrassing- can't help but get the feeling the director and actors are sticking their middle fingers up at the audience.

Marie Antoinette

Underrated. Really interesting interpretation of telling overall insight into history with a very personal touch.

John Carter
John Carter(2012)

Not as bad as they say.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Overrated, or maybe just doesn't live up to expectations with such an incredible cast. Impact and suspense falls short of great spy and espionage flicks.

New Naked Gun? Pretty darn stupid but has its Wiig & SNL moments (good and bad). Phillippe is a cool straight man that has a very surprising funny moment.

What Sci-Fi flicks should aspire to be. Gritty, classy with a moral to the story.

Tears for April: Beyond the Blue Lens

Pretty darn sad- with small moments of hope for the continual battle against drugs.

Let Me In
Let Me In(2010)

Why? The original was so much better in every possible way.

Blood Diamond

Diamonds don't seem to sparkle anymore after seeing this film.

The Departed
The Departed(2006)

I usually hate remakes of foreign films. . . They never seem to have the same impact as the original. This one has impact in spades.

Set up with no pay off- pass on the Salt.

Tough to watch at times due to pretty full on violence- but an interesting little flick with dynamic goodies and baddies making for even blood sport. What kills you, and what makes you stronger is different for everyone and this movie made so tense I'm still feeling it's effects. John Hillcoat knows how to twist, romance and explode the screen.

The Great Gatsby

They are intriguing but after awhile you wish you didn't know them and that Gatsby hadn't tried so hard to become one of them.

Blue Water, White Death

Pioneers in shark research this quasi-doco-Steve Zissou film is an insight into 70s mindsets and aesthetics. The last 10 minutes really is worth waiting for. I envy their pioneering aquatic work captured on film, unfortunately not their musical shipmate nor their 70s ethics.

The Bourne Legacy

Fast-paced and simple plot- what a spy/thriller/government agents film should be. Probably should have been rebooted as The Cross Chronicals though as this is no super spy but genetically enhanced plot at work.

Good stuff- beautifully made and a very heartfelt plot.

Heartbreaking. This movie plays on your mind and on your sense of reality!

We Need to Talk About Kevin

Badly written. . I just didn't believe the world, which is very sad because it set up such an interesting premise. The mother/son relationship is over the top and the hubby and sister are far too naive. . Maybe they walked onto the wrong lot. .

Snow White and the Huntsman

Bad. Stewart is a very uncharismatic lead- Theron is over acting badly to create a very uneven and already done (most of the scenes are literally lifted from other movies) movie. Hemsworth is fun onscreen but has no support around him. Underused dwarfs was just one of many potential supports the film should have used to support it's clumsy weight better.

The Chamber
The Chamber(1996)

Underated. I found it compelling and thought provoking.

Notes on a Scandal

The potential downside of female friendships told in a brilliant movie of manipulation, obsession and love

Nowhere Boy
Nowhere Boy(2010)

Good "origin" story told about a world class singer/song writer.

Gritty and great!

A Dangerous Method

Really bad. Not sure what was worse - Keira's accent and performance or the incredibly slow moving and drawn out scenes.

The Dark Knight Rises

Solid trifecta. Nolan needs to pay better attention to audio levels though as always- voice/accents and music/explosions are uneven.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Okay. But one has to ask- why bother Fincher? Making remakes can be based in arrogance. I believe this one was.

Horrible Bosses

Very funny- worth a watch for some genuine laughs. Flaws/believeability can be completely overlooked because it's funny enough not to notice!

The Incredibles

Brad Bird is the new Walt Disney for a new generation.

The Matrix
The Matrix(1999)

New breed of Sci-Fi movie.

A WTF movie if ever I saw one, very disappointing- mainly on plot (ridden with holes) and Characters.

Let the Right One In

Terrifying- evil at it's finest!

Rear Window
Rear Window(1954)

The first psychological thriller I ever saw. . . Will remain with me forever.

Disappointing. . Never really creates child suspense or adult nostalgia.

Marvel's The Avengers

Great Story/Screenplay! The Hulk owns the screen though- prepare to be Ruffalized and to enjoy it!

Classic Disney. . I expect more from Pixar though and this was a colaborative effort.

Moonrise Kingdom

Very enjoyable. Wes-Style at it's best.

Disappointing. Missed the mark with the jokes and the lack of chemistry and huge age gap just made the Lori and John duo odd.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I really enjoyed this film... Snapes' vomit comment and V/D fight was fab

my childhood... is it wrong to have a crush on a car?

The Lady From Shanghai

This is my all time favourite movie - every shot is a piece of art... all the characters are flawed and it just simmers.
