Movie Ratings and Reviews

Local Hero
Local Hero(1983)

A truly brilliant film. Burt Lancaster's sensational performance as the astronomy-fanatical oil baron added the concrete to Reigert's character, full of the most subtle and charming humour.

Lady in the Water

With Giamatti, this movie wouldn't be worth bothering with. The one-location plot doesn't work as well as, say, Phone Booth, for example. A disappointment from Shyamalan.

Ring of Bright Water

My favourite movie of all time. This classic story captures ever emotion and the superb performances by Travers and McKenna will never be forgotten.

War of the Worlds

Probably one of the biggest let-downs in recent movie history. The classic Well's story starts out interestingly enough, but soon runs out of steam as the jounrey to escape the Martians becomesprotrcated and quite boring. Tom Cruise wasn't suited to the lead role, either.

Love Actually

Richard Curtis' exceptional career continues with this series of stories all inextricably linked. Not an easy one to pull off, but stars such as Grant, Neesan, Firth and Rickman make it an unbridled hit. Nighy and Thompson's performances are the icing on the cake.

Bruce Almighty

Hollywood humour doesn't come much better than this in one of Carey's finest roles ... although even he is eclipsed by carell's classic gibberish newsreading peiece.

Pretty Woman
Pretty Woman(1990)

Classic poor girl rich guy love story. Julia Roberts plays a perfect role as the tramp who becomes a lady. It's one of the all-time memorable movie anecdotes.

The Day After Tomorrow

The big stars are there. The special effects are there. The message is stark. But somehow it doesn't gel into something that makes it compulsive viewing.

About a Boy
About a Boy(2002)

Brilliant adaptation of Hornby's superb book. Grant is sheer perfection and without doubt is best performance ever.

Austin Powers in Goldmember

Myers did no favours to his career with the Powers series, but this was probably the wittiest of them all.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Definately one for the big screen, but an uninspiring story saved by Depp's fantastic performance.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

One of the great Spielberg classics, with his best cast members - as always - being the kids.

50 First Dates

I'm not the biggest Sandler fan but this is a novel story which somehow works.

Definitely the best of the Spidey movies, and a great example of a genre where sequels rarely work. McGuire and Dunst were well-chosen castings.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The fourth movie of the series is definitely the best. The subject matter is becoming noticeably less appropriate for young children.

King Kong
King Kong(2005)

An engaging movie with inspiring special effects but simply too long and it loses momentum. Jack Black offers the best performance.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Without doubt the best of the six movies after the original. Christiansen's performance as Anakin turning to Vador is brilliant.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Classic. Timeless. A work of art. Jackson perfectly captures the mind of Tolkein in this third part of the Rings trilogy.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Gripping update of the classic story although some of the imagary is stong for children.

Spectacular movie intertwining a moving love story with the targic events of April 1912.
