The real-life relationships of the actors playing the Youngers, the Jameses, the Millers and the Fords made this slice of American history much easier to understand than the darker, psychological "Assassination of Jesse James", the characters of all the bankrobbers being no less absorbing. The music of Ry Cooder made me want to jump up and ride a horse.
Well-executed thrills and spills, brilliant underwater photography and chiki biki music and sound from Oscar winner AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty. So what if they do nothing to advance the plot?
The French 'Gone With the Wind', lush with period detail and rife with the varieties of passion. The Pantomime art form gets a central and 'sympa' treatment in this film in the form of a celebrated buffoon who suffers for not being with the woman he loves. The last scene brings home the tragic irony of his condition as he struggles to make his way through a carnival crowd of harlequins towards the love he has lost.
