1) the subtitles are illegible and 2) I still have no clue why this guy decided to do this film other than he had nothing else and was desperate for a story ... he doesn't really seem to have an appreciation for the history and culture and just naively followed the sensationalism of a post 9/11 witch hunt and 3) he went about it totally the wrong way ... traveling privately into a war zone... dumbass
This movie was supremely disappointing. It had a lot of potential and a great cast, but there was just no development of the plot or characters. In short, it fell flat and I found myself bored. It felt like the screenwriter/director raised a lot of questions that she never answered... started a lot of threads that were never addressed or resolved... and included a lot of distracting side storylines that had no relevance to whatever the main point of the movie was supposed to be. I think the purpose was just to depict and also normalize a lesbian-parented family, but they were too subtle with the points they were trying to make and I have a feeling people who aren't already familiar with lesbian culture will walk away having their preconceived notions reaffirmed rather than informed.
Wow they must have really undersold this movie... looking at the trailers for it they really just didn't market it well. Its interesting and could have been really good, but instead it has that tv drauma feel to it and falls short as a feature film ... so I enjoyed it... and am glad I didn't pay to see it in a theater in 1981 :P ... not that I was alive then but you get the picture... I would like to see this re-done and not in a sensationalistic way... but I doubt you could top Sally Field and Paul Newmann... so its mostly just a missed opportunity.
This movie was unexpectedly enjoyable :) I expected it to be dumb humor, which I tend not to enjoy... but I actually laughed a lot. It was cute and I surprisingly like Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn together... they were believable.
Best Christmas movie ever! Danny Kaye and Bing and Rosemary Clooney were all perfectly cast. I can't imagine anyone doing a better job. I could have done without Vera Ellen, mainly because her thinness makes me uncomfortable and she doesn't seem to have any spark with Danny Kaye, but that's perfectly okay since Danny has more than enough spark to compensate.
