Anthony Gomez's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

No Country for Old Men

One of the best movies of the 2000s.

The Nice Guys

Go see it. Shane Black is still the man. So many reversals in this story you'll laugh and be entertained throughout.

Ex Machina
Ex Machina(2015)

Kept me absolutely intrigued the whole way through. This is the kind of movie that doesn't leave your memory.

"Popularity is the slutty little cousin of prestige"

Bad Santa
Bad Santa(2003)

A funny black comedy I have to watch around the Holidays. Shows even the darkest of characters have good in them buried somewhere -- and when we see this good, we can relate to Bad Santa.

Jerry Maguire

One of my favorite movies. Top ten for sure.

The Room
The Room(2003)

As bad as it is, it's still strangely watchable. Still entertaining. Like a car accident that you stop, watch, hold up traffic for, and laugh at for its absurdity, only to get off the next exit to pick up your friends and bring them back so they can see it for themselves.

Judi Dench is top notch in this drama about an Irish-Catholic woman searching for the son she had out of wedlock during her teenage years. With the help of a BBC reporter (Coogan) looking for a story to reboot his career, Philomena searches for her son the convent sold to Americans. Based on a true story, people upset the movie criticizes Catholicism may want to ask why the events the movie is based on happened in the first place, almost the same way Philomena does.

American Hustle

Close to perfect as any crime film can get, but strangely rushes its ending before it can deliver a truly satisfying climax. Regardless, it's one of the better movies of 2013 hands down, with a top notch cast that has fun doing what they do best. Christian Bale's Irving Rosenfeld is one of the best con men put on screen.

Silver Linings Playbook

A strong seriousness and tone gets lost halfway through when the girl and guy make a commitment to each other (to do a dance performance), but its still enjoyable as the two leads refuse to show nothing but their best.

Thor: The Dark World

It takes some time to gain some traction, but Thor: The Dark World' becomes a ridiculous, visually fun ride.

Enough Said
Enough Said(2013)

Probably one of the best Rom-Coms this decade is James Gandolfini's last role, and he knocks it out of the park.

This is excellence. Sandra Bullock's perfomance sends it into the stratosphere. Oscar nominations for Bullock and Alfonso Cuaron for directing are almost definite.

Easy A
Easy A(2010)

Charming and entertaining. One of the better teen comedies in years.

Girl Most Likely

The movie doesn't know where it wants to go. The plot you came to see isn't there because the structure is way off. The hell with it -- let's throw an action scene in the third act because we don't know how to end it.

Ordinary People

Starts slow. Strong theme and performances. This kind of movie wouldn't even be made today (except by Independent Filmmakers) let alone win the Oscar for Best Picture. Doesn't mean it's not good. It's really good -- a time when filmmaking took its time with the story and characters.

Training Day
Training Day(2001)

This is all Denzel's movie. He gets to use everything in the actor's arsenal.

This is 40
This is 40(2012)

Somewhat honest viewpoint on suburban family life, but the comedy is lost somewhere in it all.

A chick flick anyone could appreciate and enjoy. Light hearted, well written, and funny comedy from Amy Heckerling, who in my eyes has a couple of the best high school movies in separate decades: Fast Time at Ridgemont High for the 80's, and this movie for the 90's.

Indie Game: The Movie

Excellent documentary on the struggles of creating an independent video game, focusing on the creators of Super Meat Boy, Fez, and Braid.

The One
The One(2001)

Totally ridiculous yet laughably entertaining.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Not bad, but not exactly good either.

Wreck-it Ralph

Finally. A truly great video game movie for all ages. Adults that grew up on gaming will catch a lot of references to games of our past, and kids will enjoy the fast and colorful action. Most importantly, both will enjoy the simple story about being happy with who you are.

Sam Mendes proves he can direct action by bringing his focus on character into the Bond mix. "Sometimes the old way of doing things is the best." Very enjoyable from start to finish. My only gripe is that Craig lacks the suaveness of Bonds from the past, but the movie makes a strong point that they're moving forward.

An action movie done with true artistic vision and direction.

Driving Miss Daisy

This wouldn't win Best Picture today, but it's a wonderful movie about two different people that need each other more than they ever imagined. I love this movie.

It's like a car accident you have to slow down and watch, except the paramedics are horrible actors and the car accident victim is Shaq, and you can only sit there and wonder how he got involved in such a tragedy. Maybe it was his own doing, as he is also Executive Producer. Positives? It's laughably bad, so you may enjoy a couple of chuckles.

Birdemic: Shock And Terror

The half star is for making me laugh a couple of times because of the stiff acting and the atrocious special effects. The rest is very difficult to get through. One of the worst movies I've ever seen. Worse than The Room. Worse than Troll 2. Worse than Plan 9. Worse than Manos: The Hands of Fate... well, maybe on par with Manos.

Die Hard
Die Hard(1988)

One of my favorite movies. The action movie that was the trendsetter of its time.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

My review:

Marvel's The Avengers

One of the best superhero movies ever made. Well worth the wait. (Also, we finally got a director that did the Hulk justice).

Probably my favorite animated film since The Lion King. I love this movie.

Office Space
Office Space(1999)

It has its moments with fun characters, but it doesn't really follow through with its premise. Even so, it's still an enjoyable watch. Just don't skip work to see it.

The People vs. George Lucas

Good, but not great. The People vs George Lucas focuses on how a generation of fans grew to love a franchise, only to turn on its creator after a "there's no way it can live up to your expectations" prequel trilogy. It's just a bunch of film and movie geeks complaining about the prequels, but as a geek myself, it was an enjoyable watch. Could have have been a little more focused and maybe should have delved deeper into its subject matter without being as one-sided, which would have made a movie for geeks even better.

The Cabin in the Woods

Over the top, but smart. Funny, but adds the thrills and kills too. I would argue a milestone in the horror genre, where any horror movie made after it remotely resembling anything before it will be laughed at as "been there, done that." THE CABIN IN THE WOODS is more self-aware than Scream was back in 1996. Scary. Funny. Thrilling. Original. Try to see it without knowing much about it. Highly recommended if you're a fan of horror.

One of the worst movies and book adaptations of the 2000s. Lacks depth, soul, and heart, although it pretends to have all three.

The Artist
The Artist(2011)

A modern classic. A film that will stand the test of time and win audiences over for years to come.

Observe and Report

The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer is solid entertainment with a great cast led by a strong performance by McConaughey, but it's nothing you probably haven't seen on Law and Order. It starts off slow, but it surprisingly picks up when we find out whodunit...

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

A CGI rabbit water dweller named Jar-Jar Binks ruins what could have been a good movie. With him, along with other hiccups, make this a weak addition to the franchise.

Scream 4
Scream 4(2011)

Fun, bloody, and very self aware, Scream 4 never takes itself seriously and brings back a sleeping franchise with a smile... actually a stab. The best Scream since the original.

500 Days of Summer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel shine in (500) Days of Summer, a romantic comedy that breaks the usual cliched love story and adds a dash of realism to connect audiences to not just likeable characters, but the familiar ups and downs of a relationship. Arguably one of the best romantic-comedies of the 2000's.

Rango is an animated film aimed more so at adults, about a chameleon with an identity crisis that needs to discover his life's calling. A loving tribute to Westerns of the past, Rango is an refreshing success lead graciously by the voice of Johnny Depp.

Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch(2011)

A loud, obnoxious film that takes itself too seriously while the 1-dimensional protagonist fantasizes about shooting up random baddies in slo-mo with guns, swords, and anything else she can imagine, Sucker Punch is a prime example of all style without substance.

An over the top thriller, similar to TAKEN, that tries too hard to have a twist ending and only falls flat in the third act. Overall, still enjoyable.

Awful. Not as bad as Twilight, but it's close. Very close. That star and half is mainly for Neil Patrick Harris being awesome. That's it. It's just a poorly done rendition of Beauty and Beast where the audience learns the main character is a total jerk and we are seemingly forced to like him because he has daddy issues.

Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari)

Bought this movie in college when I started getting into Japanese Cinema thanks to a World Cinema course I was taking. Tokyo Story is a simple story done perfectly.

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Better than the previous two prequels, but that's like saying a rock is better than two pieces of shit. Good entertainment, but when it comes to the whole Star Wars mythos that was established in the originals, this gets too much wrong -- and worse, after three movies building up Darth Vader, he's made into a joke in his 10 minutes or so of screen time.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones

Worse than the Phantom Menace. Why? The forced and boring love story between Anakin and Padme.

Random aliens attack the city and people we don't care about try to survive. Great special effects, crappy story.
