La Mujer Del Puerto

Very bold and cool movie about a poor girl forced into prostitution. The photography is gritty and great, very much like a film noir going awry and dirty! The main character is compltely in debt to Marlene Dietrich's pose, the plot is fragmented, deliriously odd and melodramatic and in a little more than an hour you have it all - suicide, incest, sex, random nudity, violence, prostitution. Again, very bold for its time and an interesting piece if just for that!

Foreign Land (Terra Estrangeira)

Sad, nostalgic look at Portugal's landscape from a Brazilian point of view. The music by Gal Costa is probably one of the high points of the fim, but its heavy handed flirt with French Nouvelle Vague is actually interesting too.

Persepolis (2007)

Sweet, fascinating and witty plot, which combines eerie animation with political discourse. I was very pleasantly surprised since I'm not a big fan of animation, but this is a rather complex piece, which forces the audience to think about what is the point of war, the instability of the human being, and moreover, how dark and cruel political regimes can be.

Interesting film which ultimately seems a bit predictable, but still has a classy atmosphere to it. The plot twist is indeed unexpected, but the ending not so much, therefore it did not reach 4 stars in my book.

The Life Before Her Eyes

I seriously spent three quarters of this movie hating it, feeling the visual metaphors were so heavy-handed that I couldn't take another shot filled with luscious flowers and swimming pools without flinching. This said the premisse is really fascinating - two friends locked in a bathroom with a Columbine-like killer have to make a life-changing decision. Unfortunetely it's so poorly executed you reach the end of the film tired and too bored to care for these characters. it's a pity - it could have been brilliant. Still 3 stars for the pondering on guilt and taking consequences.
