If you want skilfully female directed horror I point you toward the likes of the likes of Jennifer Kent's "The Babadook", Ana Lily Amirpour's "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night", Julia Ducournau "Raw" and the Soska twin's "American Mary" to name but four. I would highly recommend bypassing "XX" which is overall a genre dud. In the most part, not entirely I add.
This was a horror anthology that had little understanding of the genre it was dealing with. I remember an interview with the directors of the movie and Annie Clark admitted that she didn't like the horror genre and had never seen a horror movie... and boy was that blindingly obvious! Generally as a showcase of female writer/director talent, it was plain and simply a shallow embarrassing mess of badly executed ideas.
The mind boggles how this movie manage a fresh rating, clearly these professional critics were not watching the same film as me.
