Outstanding. James Franco is amazing and given the subject matter the film is oddly uplifting and celebrates man's basic will to survive in the face of adversity. James Franco should be the front runner for Best Actor in the Academy Award Sweepstakes.
Mixed. Solid acting but where this could have been an excellent film / character study showing the physical sacrifices and emotional toll of being a prima ballerina - it too often veers into campiness and is more Showgirls with tutus instead of The Wrestler in a tutu. This could have been poised to have been a wonderful comeback vehicle for Winona Ryder sadly her role was poorly written and the contrast of one who sacrificed and one who is following that same path is never explored, instead it portrays the lead as a paranoid schizophrenic given to delusions of homicide. What a waste and shame.
Outstanding. Some of the best ensemble acting of the year. Standout performances in this true story of overcoming odds and a friendship forged between a king and a commoner. This movie has it all - very uplifting.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Rent The Mummy. This was dull. It seemed to have all the elements of a good summer flick. State of the art effects, great production design, decent storyline and a great villain. So what went wrong? Jake Gyllenhaal & Gemma Arterton. Separately they are awful, together deadly. He is totally miscast and is a cipher throughout the film. She is grating. I cannot think of a film in recent memory where the chemistry between the two leads is non-existent. Didn't anyone watch the dailies and see that neither generated any charisma. Avoid.
