It's an okay movie, but not one of the best films Denzel has been involved in. It's quite violent and dark, but for me it lacks some spark.
Out of the Fuqua-Washington collaborations, I prefer Training Day.
Fairly boring film, although the performances from Jeffrey Wright and Catherine Zeta-Jones save it from being bad.
Russell Crowe is one of my all-time fave actors, but I feel his performance here is pretty one-note and forgettable. I don't blame him though, Hughes's direction was possibly the cause for this issue.
Let me make clear that I love the sequel (Aliens) quite a bit. With that in mind, I currently like this one a teeny-weeny bit more. It came first, it gave us a dark story (thus being a clever reaction to the more uplifting Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope), and seems to send a message to people that we shouldn't wait for issues to get bigger before we face them.
One of Mr. Scott's masterpieces.
