Star Trek
Star Trek (2009)

Rewatching this with my son, who knew almost nothing about Star Trek, but still enjoyed it immensely. A really good remake. Exiting as a stand alone film, but also schock full of references to the earlier iterations. Sort of wondering if the gaps in the plot was an homage to the original scripts of the TV series...

Doctor Strange

This turned out, not entirely to my surprise, to instantly make it into my top list of favourite Marvel movies. Partly, this is because of Cumberbatch - one of my favourite actors right now, but also because the storyline deviates from that of far too many recent Marvel slug-fest movies. I also felt that this was actually rather close to the idea and feeling of the original comics, which for me is a definite plus. I will most definitely watch this again, and I rank it right up there with the first Iron Man movie and Guardians of the Galaxy.

X-Men: Apocalypse
50 days ago via Rotten Tomatoes

After the excellent Days of Future Past I had high hopes for this, the latest installment in the X-Men franchise, and even though it lacks the former movie's depth, I quite liked it (contrary to most critics it seems...). This was mostly due to the fact that these were "my" X-Men, with storylines from a period when I read these comics voraciously. So naturally I appreciated all the fan service that was included, even though the overall plot line was a bit thin and the action several levels too bombatisc for my taste.

Warcraft (2016)

As an old Warcraft gamer, I approached this film with some trepidation. My worst fears may not have come true, but a new Lord of the Rings, this was not. Some of the special effects were cool, but often it shines through that this film just didn't have the money to do things right, And the plot is just weak, stacked full with too many characters and too much action, making it clear that the filmmakers were aiming for this to be the origin film for a major film franchise. As such it may be OK, but as a film in itself it leaves me somewhat cold.

Oh and if you never played Warcraft, stay clear of this movie, it won't make much sense.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Whew! Days of Future Past was one of my all-time favourite X-Men stories back in the day, and it was with not a little trepidation that I sat down to watch this. Some of the earlier X-Men films have left me feeling a bit cheated, as they have failed to bring to life the thrills, the fun, the action and the pathos of the original X-Men comics. This, though, lived up to my expectations and, almost, has me forgiving 20th Century Fox for some of the earlier duds in this series.
