Jet Li starts to act funny in Hong Kong film industry after "The Legend",successfully opened himself more chances in different role. Jet Li is no longer just = Wong Fei Hung. Josephine Siao is really the key character to vary the film, without her, the film won't be so special. If you like this kind of kung fu comedy genre, of course, you can't miss "The Legend 2" which was released in the same year and try to look for"Wong Fei Hung: Chi tit gai dau neung gung(1993)" and "Hong Xi Guan: Zhi Shao Lin wu zu(1994)".
The story would interest people who don't know about ghost month. It is too slow and kept repeating Alyssa's perception which ruined the whole movie. A lot of scenes copy Hollywood made Asian ghost story but anyways, the movie won best director and best cinematography at Chicago Horror Film Festival.
John Woo clearly introduce the classic ancient Chinese story to the world without much culture shock, quiet understandable and acceptable. Ref Cliff I focus on introducing the background of the war, in Red Cliff II, he made the characters speak out their own mind and what they represented in film, also showed wisdom and philosophy of ancient Chinese, which is quintessence of the film.
I though John Woo kept Chiling Linâs stunning performance here to surprise audience, I saw he tried hard with professional cinematography to fix her acting, but it didnât help much. Chiling Lin just needs a lot of chances to act, then she might be a successful actress in the future. I also got problem to deal with Chen Changâs acting, he doesnât change much from last time I saw him in âCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragonâ, I think he isnât really suitable to play in ancient costume, all he has is too urban, especially the accent. Anyways, Red Cliff isnât the best film from John Woo, but it certainly is the best âRomance of the Three Kingdomsâ film to the world. (for now).
The movie reach high concept to bring message of how brutal politics can be behind people, even we do have similar stories in our politics here in Taiwan, I still think it's too dramatic which makes it fun.You just wanna see how the story close up all these quirky twist in the end.
