Tom's Review of Only God Forgives
Only God Forgives(2013)
(1/2 Star) All the stylish direction and neon cinematography can't hide the fact that Only God Forgives is unfathomably boring. It must be 80 minutes of people looking at things and 10 minutes of morose violence. Nicolas Winding Refn, whose film Drive felt like an action movie version of Lost in Translation (and a breath of fresh air), created the longest 90 minute movie ever and filled it with tedious arthouse long-takes and brutality. I don't know how it's possible, but the VIOLENCE is boring. Maybe I'm not "understanding" this mess and it's actually a huge satire that means to say brutality is pointless... only problem is that we got a pointless movie. This is neither fun or captivating to watch, only frustrating. Only God Forgives is the definition of style over substance.
