Sad that the last movie of Murphy needed to be this mess. And it is not as if the story was particularly bad... the director and yes, sadly, Murphy's own performance conspired to kill this thriller before it got out of the starting blocks. The script, halfway in, seemed rushed. I heard better dialogue being spewed in low budget, bargain bin straight-to-dvd fair. Just not the sendoff Murphy deserved.

I have been a huge fan of Liam Neeson's work for years now. And ever since I saw Taken I could not help but feel as if he was trying desperately to reinvent himself as an actor. I don't mind that much, but when an actor throws himself into a role such as this based on the script alone it is a tragic thing when the director mucks things up so badly that not even a man like Liam can save the project.

The script is good enough. The performances is good enough. Frank Langella and Bruno Gantz deliver one of the most powerful scenes in recent movie memory. Yet... Collet Serra as a director have the artistic ability of a music video director and the finesse of a plastic surgeon armed with a chainsaw.
The movie is not all bad. The basic plot and synopsis carries a certain amount of merit and in the hands of the Scorsese's or JJ Abrahams' of this world it may have been a great movie.
But direction is always the key to making either a good or great movie. In this instance I feel cheated. Mediocre at best. Too often the action ventures into B Movie territory and the passages where little happens (and supposedly should be building tension) rarely drives any point home.
Ultimately pointless. Just short of two hours worth of escapism enjoyed, but can't shake the feeling that this could have been sooooooo much better.
