Only God Forgives(2013)

Ryan Gosling reunites with Nicolas Winding Refn in his latest piece of beautiful film-making. Set in Bangkok's criminal underworld, Only God Forgives is not surprisingly very dark; visually, tonally, and thematically. Just as Drive was in 2011, this film is stylish and gorgeously shot, even in the most gruesome of scenes. And also like his last film, Refn doesn't skimp on the gore. This film is violent; very very violent. But unlike his past masterwork, Only God Forgives doesn't really bring much else to the table beyond the surface. Its plot is dull and uninteresting. Its characters completely unlikable. And many scenes that are obviously going for artsy-ness end up dreadfully boring. Based on the style alone, and the admittedly gripping-at-times tensity, I give it a slight recommend. ~ B-
