Movie Ratings and Reviews
-
Grave of the Vampire (1972)
Super campy, and more rape-y than your average vampire flick. With the right crowd it's hilarious.

Pieces (1982)
Amazeballs. Amateurish, hilarious and ridiculous on every level, which mixed with the gratuitous gore makes this a grindhouse classic.

Spaceballs (1987)
Was probably hilarious if you saw it as a kid, but pretty unwatchably corny now. Still, I can't hate on anything Mel Brooks too hard.

No Retreat No Surrender (1986)
Quite simply one of the best bad movies ever made. It has it all... Karate, break dancing, shiity script, wooden acting, Los Angeles doubling for Seattle, Jean Claude Van Damme, and the ghost of Bruce Lee (played by a badly dubbed actor). What's not to love??

The Inheritance (2010)
I'm being a tad generous with my star rating, as I really wanted to like this more. The concept and cast are quite good, but it didn't live up to its promise.

Lost in America (1985)
Very funny 80s social satire from the always-brilliant Albert Brooks (and his writing partner at the time, Monica Johnson). The story arc is a tad thin, but what's there is enjoyable.

Laid to Rest (2009)
Another one where I can't understand the good reviews... There's potential here, but it's wasted on a story that doesn't build to anything terribly exciting. And I'm so tired of seeing horror characters do stupid shit like, say, splitting up. Oy.

Hard Pill (2005)
Provocative and engrossing, with a great cast and filmmaking that transcend the low budget.

Good Hair (2009)
At once loving, entertaining and devastating -- a must-see.

The Innkeepers (2011)
I am baffled by the good reviews... It's slow as molasses, the characters make idiotic choices that defy belief, and nothing is explained when the movie's over. Ti West is the most overrated filmmaker of his generation.

Mother's Day (2010)
Utter crap, populated by the stupidest characters ever committed to cinema. It's an insult to the original Troma movie that they used the name.

Mother's Day (1980)
Low-budget brilliant piece of social satire / horror.

Beneath (2007)
This movie makes no fucking sense. At it's as scary as my pinky toe.

I Spit on Your Grave (2010)
While the "revenge" part of a rape-and-revenge movie is always sweet for me, this is not a movie that needed to be remade (much like Last House On The Left).

Hitchcock (2012)
Very entertaining, and also poignant for me as a filmmaker.

Django Unchained (2012)
Felt mixed about this one -- my inner Blaxploitation movie lover enjoyed it, but my liberal white person was a little unnerved by the slave-sploitation aspect of it all (and heavy use of the "N-word.") As with most Tarantino films, it's well-written bit also over-written.

Skyfall (2012)
Yup, totally one of the best Bond movies.

Lincoln (2012)
Riveting, moving...and educational! Great performances across the board. Spielberg's best movie in years.
