Movie Ratings and Reviews

Army of Darkness

"Give me some sugar, baby!"

I'm estimating 40 deaths in about 4 days; it doesn't get much better than that.

The Savages
The Savages(2007)

great dialogue, honest performances, and just the right amount of content in each scene.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

beautiful cinematography, great acting, too long.

Gone Baby Gone

Could the wife please be more emotional and less helpful? I wouldn't want people to think that women can be rational and intelligent just like men.

Me and You and Everyone We Know

Fantastic! I can't help a giggly smile on my face whenever I watch this. Each character is complexly constructed, honestly played, and presented from a quirky perspective. What's there to want?

Disneynature Earth

I'm making my way through the series... The Jungle is the best so far; nothing trumps parasitic fungi.

The Blue Planet: Seas of Life: Ocean World / Frozen Seas

Zomg! Fantastic! My favorite was "The Deep", but I'm not going to complain with any of them; simply spectacular visuals that will awe and inspire.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

This episode is just not as eventful or thoughtful as the second (-.75 stars). And, those damn teddy bear warriors (-.75 stars)!

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

This was pretty fantastic. My favorite, by far.

The reason I give this movie a high rating is mostly due to the fact that I think its approaching an important topic that is under-considered. The second best thing about this film is that it is relatively straightforward and stays on-task.

Apocalypse Now

Fantastic! I must see it again and then perhaps I can write a meaningful review.

Horrible acting, but that's never why one watches a movie starring David Bowie. The creative vision is astounding.

I just want everyone to know that it was Scott's idea.

Angels in the Outfield

I hate you network television for playing this and other baseball movies over and over again.

I'm torn between a 4 and a 4.5., so I gave the movie the benefit of the doubt. There are certainly moments of pristine quality, dampened by others that are dull or unconvincingly acted (especially through the middle as the war comes into play). Overall, a stunning spectacle, very intricate in its presentation, that touches on all of our favorite themes.

Two Weeks Notice

What can I say, I'm a sucker for romantic comedies, and Hugh Grant is king of this genre.

... and, all with a $7,000 budget!

V for Vendetta

I'm not going to rule out that I love this movie more for having seen it first at a "V for Vegetarian" party.

Children of Men

Interesting concept, but upsettingly underdeveloped.

'So, it's just McLovin? That's badass.'

What Dreams May Come

I re-watched this recently and really enjoyed the visuals. That, alone, deserves praise.

This is not a good movie. It is comparable to Brokeback Mountain, in that it is sending a message that is emerging from minority to majority -- and has been vastly overestimated for this reason. There is nothing of subtlety or artfulness in the way the message is delivered.

I Heart Huckabees

I tried to get through this movie three times. Three. I just never got into it, and never finished it. I think that deserves a half star.

The Truman Show

Why doesn't Jim Carrey just stick to drama? He's much better in that capacity, if you ask me.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

You know it's good when you read the book and you liked the movie better.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Wow, this movie is underrated. Those who know what's up have it on VHS.

Fast Food Nation

Did a half-assed job at presenting too many messages, all of which were in your face and driven by characters with shoddy dialogue -- not one of them authentic.

Pride and Prejudice

I overrate this movie for sentimental concerns; my mother, sister, and I have seen the BBC and A&E interpretations dozens of times together as a strange but happy ritual. This version does a surprisingly good job of capturing the depth of character and overall atmosphere with a mere 2 hours of work.

Most of these stars come from the intriguing (read "scary") nature of the subject. I think the approach was rather drab.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

Apatow's best, next to Anchorman.

Dazed and Confused

It stands out among high school coming-of-age flicks, but these movies just aren't my cup of tea.

An offbeat, yet endearing, performance. Though markedly "Indie," it manages to remain unassuming with earnest emotion and comedy. I'd love to see this movie again.

The Science of Sleep

A visual pleasure, but utterly unlikeable characters.

Meet Joe Black

I liked it much better before I learned it was a remake.

The Dead Girl

Overacted, with crushing melodramatic atmosphere. Though, curiously-structured and entertaining in the least.

I liked the music. The storyline was non-existent.

Across the Universe

I was disappointed. The music was good, but the plot was completely unsatisfying. And it was unduly long.

Chips, the War Dog

zomg, childhood favorite!

The Air Up There

It's so feel-good -- black people and white people playing nicely together. Another childhood favorite.

Cool Runnings

It's so much fun. A childhood favorite.

I really tried to like it, because I enjoy oddities. It disappoints.

Shakespeare in Love

What can I say? I'm a romantic.

National Lampoon's Animal House

I'm probably partial because my folks hosted a 'Branhamal House' toga party

Maid in Manhattan

I'd give it lower if I could
