The denizens of the asylum might well have crawled from the pages of Goya's Caprichos.
This is probably my favourite live-action film, and surely the greatest thriller of all time. The mystery unfolds quite wonderfully, and, with Clouzot directing in a very unpretentious but very effective way, there is a stark matter-of-factness to the film that tricks the viewer into taking everything at face value. This ultimately immerses the viewer so much in the film that the climax is truly chilling on first viewing.
The film is worth a second viewing to appreciate how brilliantly Clouzot distracts the viewer from the deliberately-placed clues to the real goings on in the film. Vera Clouzot's rather wet character is given the most prominence, but it is Simone Signoret who gives the film's best performance as her rather butch co-conspirator.
Probably the worst of the Peter Cushing Frankenstein series, 'The Evil of Frankenstein' (the title of which doesn't fit - Victor Frankenstein is more heroic in this film than in any other in the series!) relies too much on the characteristics of the Universal Frankenstein series to be distinct or original. The monster is intended to resemble the Boris Karloff version but comes off looking like a modroc Easter Island head - probably the worst 'creature' in the series. The script is also a little too 'higgledy-piggledy'.
Despite this Freddie Francis' direction ensures a few iconic shots; the laboratory, though obviously Universal-inspired, is excellent; Don Banks' score is very good indeed; and Peter Cushing shines as usual, as the fastidious Baron - bringing what he can to the role despite the disappearance of the ambiguity the character had in the last two films.
