Solo is the best Star Wars movie wince Empire Strikes Back. I don't know what movie the people who didn't love this movie were watching. Maybe they had terrible mothers. Or too much therapy for their terrible mothers. But like Jon Snow, they know nothing.
This movie was fun. This movie had great lines. This movie had heart. This movie will have a sequel. These are true statements. Live by them.
This is not Heathers. It’s not a bad movie, but comparisons to Heathers are self-serving and misleading. This movie could not have been made by Gen-Xers. This movie is really more comparable to The Graduate, and the malaise and pointlessness that life seems to have when one is young and without responsibility. I know this is supposed to be a satire of the self-indulgent, pampered, entitled, and narcissistic, but I wonder if it is a movie that could be made only by a self-indulgent, pampered, entitled, and narcissistic writer/director. Of course, if Finley is not these things himself, and still manages to portray them so well, he is going to be a great Director. I hope that is the case.
This is a great film because of how it was made. It was animated by hand, with artists painting in the style of van Gogh. It is fantastic! If you know anything about van Gogh's works, you will recognize the paintings made the basis for many of the scenes in bars or in the fields near Arles or Paris. It is a wonderful tribute to the inventor of Modern Art (the good kind!)
The actors also take great pains to pronounce "van Gogh" in proper Dutch fashion. I think you have to be Dutch to do it exactly right, but they get closer than I would.
1. Nicole Kidman's plastic surgeon deserves an Oscar.
2. There may be a CGI artist who also deserves an Oscar for making Nicole Kidman look ... not young, but younger.
3. Jason Momoa is a pretty good actor, and kept up with Patrick Wilson, Charles Beach, and Kidman. Dafoe was obviously the best, and Dolph Lungren was surprisingly good!
Special effects were good, but while technically marvelous, the director seemed to have put little thought or effort into making the effects coherent or supportive of the story.
And the story, well, that's the real problem. There were half-a-dozen stories crammed into this movie. Maybe a better writing team and director could have pulled it off, but this group of moviemakers wasn't up to the challenge. The audience was silent most of the movie. I was the only one who laughed at any of the jokes, and I laugh at anything. Well, there was one funny joke, but I won't spoil it.
Basically, it was pretty lame for 85% of the time, and while Momoa, Kidman, and Dafoe did rally around the reunion story, I don't think anyone cared much about the rest of the plot. Maybe they can pull off a Justice League movie if they hire Joss Whedon or one of the good Marvel directors.
Very scary, some good laughs and pretty good overall. I guess I should have realized that there was no way they could cover the whole book in one little movie. I look forward to the next one and hope they don't just try to drag it out. Liked the turtle. ??
