Lucy
Lucy(2014)

Great flick! Strange, violent, interesting, cool as hell.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Damn the critics " Prince of Persia is excellent!

2 Guns
2 Guns(2013)

Great double triple quadruple crossin' crime action flick! And lots of great 'splosions!

Insidious
Insidious(2011)

This was actually quite good, once I was able to force myself to watch it (in the daytime). Quite a few good jumpy moments and goosebump scenes. The twist was twisty enough to make it worthwhile.

The Innkeepers

Slow. Boring. The scary parts do not serve to further the story. The ending is sudden and a major letdown.

Dog Soldiers
Dog Soldiers(2002)

[SPOILER] A dog is shot in the head at the beginning of this film. After that, it's a rather pointless "monster is hunting us" scenario in the Scottish highlands, following a trained group of black ops soldiers. I shut it off after 25 minutes, not interested in seeing more people with their entrails hanging out.

Escape From Tomorrow

An interesting attempt at an odd thriller set in Disney World / Disneyland. At times, the camerawork is horrible (seems like a cell phone shot it), and at times it's well-done. Mostly, it's fun to spot where the actors are, and see how the real-life tourists around them react to their acting (slapping a child, screaming in anguish). Not a great movie, but an interesting experiment. And what's with that ending?

Turbo
Turbo(2013)

A fun, lighthearted and creative tale about a snail who endeavors to race in the Indy 500. Though it's aimed solidly at kids, adults can find lots here to entertain as well.

Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass(2010)

Bink. Down one star because the sequel was so bad that it made me re-think my stance on this film as well.

Kick-Ass 2
Kick-Ass 2(2013)

So bad that I'm taking a star away from the first movie. The films and the comics are juvenile and pointless, with stupid gore and ridiculous cursing. This kinda stuff can actually be done well ... but these films are not done well. The world is not a better place for them having existed. The dialogue is poor. The special effects are bad. It's all buckets of gore and gross jokes and bad words. Hit Girl is fun. That's about it. Ugh.

Gravity
Gravity(2013)

Worth $12. Not a relaxing film by any means.

Hustlers
Hustlers(2013)

Not good. Felt like it was trying to be Pulp Fiction, but was just disturbing and messy.

Face/Off
Face/Off(1997)

Ridiculous, yet entertaining. Lots of things asplode.

Europa Report

Decent sci-fi things-go-wrong space mission. Very slow build up.

The Lone Ranger

Critics be damned, The Lone Ranger is a blast! Unfortunately, Helena Bonham Carter is in it. Regardless, it's great fun!

R.I.P.D.
R.I.P.D.(2013)

Jeff Bridges makes this barely tolerable. A few funny jokes. Mostly it's a sea of mediocre CGI and very, very odd style choices. Why are the undead monsters portrayed as idiotic, obese lumbering things with extra mouths / arms / heads? Bleh.

Byzantium
Byzantium(2013)

Not a bad vampire flick ?? leaps beyond any of the Twilight movies ?? and Saorise Ronan's best since Hanna (2011).

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

Cute piece about the world of writing celebrity articles for a high class New York Magazine. Simon Pegg is good. Watching the film makes me glad I don't have to interact with Megan Fox, ever.

After Earth
After Earth(2013)

Not nearly as terrible as I had been led to believe. Hell, I say it's a solid adventure flick and one of M. Night's better movies. I'll go out on a limb here and say it's his #2 of all time! Recommended!

Epic
Epic(2013)

It's no Pixar / Dreamworks / Disney masterpiece, but was an enjoyable lighthearted flick with some truly stunning animation.

The Great Gatsby

It's been ages since I read the novel, but the film entertained me quite a bit. I suppose I mostly liked the often fabulous (often see-through) special effects as well as good performances by Tobey Maguire, Leo DiCaprio, and the always-forlorn looking Carey Mulligan.

Lilo & Stitch

Still as wonderful and charming as it was 10 years ago. The animation (and watercolor backgrounds) is some of Disney's finest work to date. Fun Fact: Director Chris Sanders went on to make a little-known film called "How to Train Your Dragon".

The Colony
The Colony(2013)

Meh. I think I confused this film with the other post-apocalyptic snowy landscape action sci-fi piece: Snowpiercer. This one feels like Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton just had to pay the bills.

Riddick
Riddick(2013)

The least best of the three films, not including the AAA video game and animated feature.

The Bling Ring

This movie made me officially despise privileged, snotty, rich girls.

The Kings of Summer

A very solid coming of age flick with at least one very memorable character. Lots of chuckles and a bit of heartache, and some genuine "what am I watching?" moments. Good fun.

ParaNorman
ParaNorman(2012)

Second time viewing. Still loving it just as much. What a stunningly animated creepy and funny and cool movie. The current standard for stop motion (and smart horror movies). Again -- not for young kids. 5 stars!

Oblivion
Oblivion(2013)

A very cool, at times quite tense, sci-fi story. Sure, there are some plot holes, but don't listen to the critics. This is great stuff!

The Adjustment Bureau

Man, I love this movie. One of the best sci-fi/romance/follow your heart movies ever made!

Alice in Wonderland

Fabulous animation. I always forget most of this movie and rediscover it upon next viewing. Really feels like I took too much cold medicine. And I feel more lost than when I went in. Perhaps that's the point!

Bernie
Bernie(2012)

Weird, a bit twisted, and yet strangely funny at times. Jack Black does an excellent job. But I can't recommend this movie as a fun time.

Zero Dark Thirty

After struggling to understand what the characters were talking about (speed-mumbling of foreign names, terms, and locations), and watching mostly torture scenes for 30 minutes, I turned it off.

Star Trek
Star Trek(2009)

Simply far and away the best Star Trek film. That's right. I said that.

Indie Game: The Movie

An excellent documentary following a handful of (indie) video game designers, showing how they put their passion -- and indeed, their whole _lives_ into the stuff that they work so hard to create. Makes you appreciate the games even more. Super Meat Boy, Fez, and Braid are the focus.

The Croods
The Croods(2013)

A wonderful animated tale about a family f cave people, forced from their cave by impending change in their world. Fantastic animation, loads of fun, and a heart warming story. All characters are excellently portrayed and the story moves along at a fast clip. Highly recommended for all ages.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

More of a dramedy than comedy, but that was fine with me. I like Steve Carell, and found this to be a more serious movie than I expected. Jim Carrey is in his element, as he was in In Living Color -- but he is really a secondary character to Carell's and Olivia Wilde's stories.

Escape From Planet Earth

Could have been much better. Some genuinely funny parts! Animation was pretty good -- most of the time. Marred by terrible pop music choices and what seems like too many cooks in the kitchen. A fun diversion.

Rear Window
Rear Window(1954)

Not bad. Very slow, but intentionally so. I kept trying to predict the twist -- but I was wrong! A very interesting classic Hitchcock film.

Flight
Flight(2012)

I certainly wouldn't call this an "action-packed mystery thriller" as Flixter does, but I thought this was an excellent drama highlighting a man's struggle with addiction as he attempts to justify actions he took to save the "102 souls" during an airplane crash. The crash scene is truly gripping -- I was very nervous just watching it -- and the drama that plays out afterward has you both rooting for, and hoping for change in -- Denzel Washington's character. A very moving flick.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Overall, worth seeing. Spring for IMAX 3D if you can! Much of the movie was wonderous to behold ... But there were quite a few moments where I rolled my eyes, or literally face palmed. A bit on the scary side for kids. Though nothing can touch the original The Wizard of Oz (1939), this entry is leaps and bounds beyond Return to Oz (1985)!

Frankenweenie

Someone, somewhere, thought a movie targeted at young people about reanimated dead pets was a good idea. It was not. Despite some good animation and interesting characters, this film still left me feeling it was done in bad taste. Who at Disney approved this?

John Dies at the End

This movie is very much *WTF*.

A few brilliant moments, with most of the rest of the film feeling like I fell asleep watching a screwed up movie and now I was having messed up dreams ABOUT that movie. I'm still not sure what I actually watched. Other than soy sauce and bugs that live inside of people, and a giant gross alien monster, and a creature made of freezer meat, some eyeballs exploding, and a very, very disturbing doorknob.

It's "Dude, Where's My Car?" + "Evil Dead" + "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" + "Phantasm". Or something.

Jack the Giant Slayer

MOVIE REVIEW: Jack the Giant Slayer. ***/*****
Entertaining. Embarrassingly silly at times. Too many fart / booger jokes. Some cool stuff! Some bland CGI. About 20 minutes too long.

A Good Day To Die Hard

Not completely terrible, but not really Die Hard quality. More than once, II laughed when you're not supposed to. In short: It's not as good as Die Hard 2: Die Harder.

Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel

"Shaun of the Dead meets Doctor Who" (from the poster) is a pretty accurate description. A fun little film about three buddies in a pub who encounter a "time leak" and must set things right or their world will be upended. A good flick to watch with a pint and some fish and chips, I reckon.

Django Unchained

Quite a good western / slavery / revenge flick. I enjoyed it quite a lot, despite the heaping plateful of (intentionally) uncomfortable moments, and the boatload of excessive, disgusting gore (toward the end).

Upside Down
Upside Down(2013)

Unfortunately, although the premise (and often the FX) were very interesting, enough is "off" about the film to make it laughably bad by the end. The acting? The editing? Can't say for certain. I wanted to like this movie very much, but it just felt so forced and cheesy in the latter half.

Fantasia
Fantasia(1940)
½

Classic, but *gasp* boring. A few great sequences, but most drag on way too long.
