This film is a sort of "Battle of Britain: The Overture". Made during World War II, it suffers a bit from its need to fulfill a propaganda brief. However, it is also a brilliant treatment of the story of how RJ Mitchell's part in the race for the Schneider Trophy sort of accidentally spawned his Supermarine Spitfire. The more numerous Hawker Hurricane's contribution gets airbrushed out, but then the Hurricane has had to get used to that a LOT in the last 70 years, so no surprise there.
Poignantly it was one of Leslie Howard's last films before the plane in which he was travelling was shot down.
Excellent film about the events surrounding the Russians shooting down the Gary Powers U2 spy plane and the subsequent negotiations for the exchange of prisoners in a Berlin divided by the newly built wall.
Cousin Violet's adventures after Downton Abbey was handed over to the National Trust, after Lord Grantham lost all the family money for the third time. An outstanding performance by Maggie Smith & the guy playing Alan Bennett could *be* Alan Bennett. Some lovely cameo roles for various 'History Boys' too.
The excellent pilot for the abandoned prequel series to Battlestar Galactica. Set in the time of the First Cylon War, this sees the young William Adama joining his first ship, the then relatively new Battlestar Galactica. Much closer in style to BG and with much more entertaining action than the much slower moving earlier BG prequel Caprica, this could have been a great success if SyFy hadn't got cold feet about actually showing any Sci-Fi again.
I had no idea Russell Crowe had made a version of A Year in Provence until a friend with a vineyard posted a link. As I had really enjoyed the book (and Gladiator) I thought I had better rectify that & watch it. What a nice film!
