This seems to be a mixture of Heavy Metal and Pirates of the Caribbean. The animated short follows a captain of a ship that is destroyed by a menacing pirate ship called the Dark Freighter, a sinister ship with black sails, (sound familiar). The captain is marooned on an island and over the next couple days pieces of his crew wash up on the beach. The captain slowly goes mad and is willing to get home to his family at any cost before the freighter arrives to destroy everything he knows. His trek back to his home is no easy one and he finds himself talking to the dead body of his first mate and good friend. The movie is kinda boring but I managed to watch the whole thing, probably because it wasn't very long. I was let down by Watchmen the movie too so this was no surprise.
This is a really masterfully done movie for the era. The soundtrack and background music is amazing and really adds to the film. The fight scenes are superb and the vast array of martial arts specialists that comes to the tournament is impressive. A lone monk receives a letter from 2 of his disciples who are tracking a one armed boxer to kill him. If the monk gets the letter that means that the boxer killed them instead and they wish the blind monk to avenge them. He burns down his home and makes a pact to avenge them or die. He is the master of an elusive style called the Flying Guillotine that involves a weapon that has a long chain and a vale at the end that covers the head and then he yanks the chain and sharp razors cut your head off. A great movie with a cast that involves a few people who show up in some main stream kung fu and martial arts films.
This kills me to say but the movie was kinda bad. I freakin love Will Ferrell and Danny McBride and the original Land of the Lost so when I heard they were remaking it I was totally stoked. I think I fell asleep like 3 times in the movie and found myself thinking of work and other things the rest of the time. The banter between Ferrell and McBride is so top notch in East Bound and Down that I had high hopes for the movie, maybe to high. They followed the original story line well I thought but all the added fodder was just a bit too much to handle. Sorry Will and Danny I still love you though.
This is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen and I've seen quite a few. The is a short in the beginning that is almost better than the movie itself. This movie has everything you could ever want in a movie. There is action, emotion, laughter, sadness, reflection I mean everything. A boy spends his whole life dreaming of adventure married to his childhood sweetheart. Late in his years he finds himself on the adventure of a lifetime in a land far, far away. Talking dogs, rare creatures and a massive dose of heights are just a few of the prizes this movie has to offer.
