The Man Who Fell to Earth

This film is unapolagetically weird. In it's story and the arch of the characters. It's brilliant and prescient and I've seen it 100 times. I see other films aspire to it or give nods to it. Watch it and experience it on its own terms.

My favorite Ferrara film as pretentious as Bad Lt. is visceral. But in committing to the premise Ferrara's decadence is contrasted by Taylor's restraint. Like she's in a Bergman film. Not the best Vampire movie, but somehow my favorite.

While darker than the series, it is also a departure from Lynch's other work somehow. I feel this film while panned by many, had a huge influence on the J-Horror of the 90s. Especially The Grudge and The Ring.

The worst movie I've ever seen in the theater. Rips off Bronson shamelessly. Which is to say it has no understanding why Bronson is a masterpiece. It feels like it was in fact made by a marketing team with no understanding of film making. It's music choices are so, "on the nose", it's unbearable. It introduces a new character every 10 min without giving us any reason to care about anybody. The movie only wants to look cool. Made for people who don't care about anything and only want to look cool. Robbie gives a stellar performance in the midst of all this dogs--t. If I care about Harlequin for one minute in this $200 Million Mountain Dew commercial then she is a genius and I am a fan for life.

The opening was good. But keeps throwing the N word around to be edgy. And it isn't. Lots of voice over to explain why we should care about any of this mess. Looks like it was shot by a very ambitious fan of Schrader's that just got out of film school, rather than a work by the man himself. As he said about Malik's Knight of Cups...."Really?"
