This is the first film I've seen in a long time that I had NO idea what
was going to happen and only a few of my story guesses were correct
while the surprises were stunning. Ex Machina is a wonderful inspection
into humanity, intelligence, feminism and expectations. The whole time I felt a physical tension in my own gut watching every scene. I like to play a game where I puzzle the story before the next step happens and in this film, I found it a great challenge. We think we are
so smart, even when we know we are going to be our own demise, so in the end we
STILL don't know the capacity of destruction the things we make can
generate. The tension and the end are palpable. SO well done.
HOW could this great film get such low scores!?? It's AWESOME! Fun, sweet, CAMP, clever, and adorable. A real SLEEPER!!! Cult following to ensue.
there's no story a ton of things just don't make sense and in no way would people affected with a virus that makes them a Zombie be able to run that fast! A virus effects the neurological system and would impair motor skills since it turns the brain to mush. Like I said, there are SO many inconsistencies in this film and it lacks a story other than the superficial one, it just felt like a waste of time for me. I want my 2 hours back.
Luc Besson took a fairly fun and interesting sci-fi concept, added his signature beauty shots and slick action filming style to a fun adventure. Alas, another signature Luc Besson "style" is to not develop somewhat believable characters through engaging dialogue and story plausibility. Thanks to the special effects at the end, Scarlett Johansson's artistry along with Morgan Freeman's brilliance in acting and being the embodiment of trust and wisdom, the movie was a fun ride to watch on my big flat screen TV from my sofa.
I wonder, do they have a clue why their movie sucks so bad?
If you're a fan, you'll love it. What's not to like? Hobbitses, Legolas, Fantasytastic Graphics for Smaug the Dragon, ORcs, Dwarves, GANDALF, Magic Elves and Wizards, etc., etc., etc.... What more do people want? Why not give it better ratings? I sincerely do not understand why SO many people think their conventional and pretentious opinions are worthy and accurate. The Fantasy/Sci Fi genre gets trashed the majority of the time. This film is most definitely worth better ratings than it's getting here, but...if you love Fantasy and Medieval Fantasy especially, you judge it yourself. GO SEE IT! We (non fantasy loving husband and fantasyphile me) loved it.
Peter Howell of the Toronto Star gives this film the most accurate and comprehensive review IMHO. I agree with everything he said but I would add that I'm still trying to figure out if PT Anderson's (non) adaptation of Pynchon's book was lazy or brilliant. He didn't really write a screenplay adaptation of the book, he made a 'book to screen' film. It's really Joaquin Phoenix who makes this film SO compelling. Sure the other actors are all just as talented, but they are "supporting" in this film and without Joaquin's portrayal of "Doc", the whole film would have gone south. No other actor could have captivated the audience with his embodiment of Larry "Doc" Sportello, just as nobody but Jeff Bridges could have played "The Dude" in The Big Lebowski.
The visuals were spellbinding.
huh.... 49% by critics but 72% by regular viewers...so often, the pretentious critics just can't speak for the average person who actually make a film what it is.
I enjoyed this little film & I always find it obnoxious when movies like this get trash reviews because of pretentious snobbery.
What a great film! I mean, it was funny, cute, sentimental, clever, smart, fun and makes you feel YOU accomplished something at the end. A message for all the young woman in the world. Make a statement and laugh a little while doing it. SO incredibly impressed by Lake Bell! More please.
very sweet film with a great message. I love the Woody Allen style and always will. The music, the speech patterns, the story. screw the critics, this film is a must see.
The BEST movie I've seen in a LONG time! I smiled, I cried and I laughed a lot. Take a simple story and a fun mix of characters you get a really great movie. LOVED it every which way.
What a wonderful film about human frailty. It was funny and sweet and ever so relevant to everything. I can't wait to have my own Robot! I'll put stickers on mine to identify it was mine.
I liked it. I think it should have been on the SyFy channel but I LOVE Max Irons, Saoirse Ronan, William Hurt. The story was sappy, but sometimes I like that. Pure alien souls, love, family, rebel societies...I've seen worse stories with HORRIBLE actors. The actors made this for me. I enjoyed it.
I'll update this review when I'm done watching IF it surprises me but so far when Amanda Seyfried just left the Locksmith I'm pretty sure the new cop on the scene is the guy. The Dialog is terrible. It's the kind of dialog that's SO contrived it's RIDICULOUS!! NOBODY talks like these people, and the directing is SO SO bad. Most of the actors who have potential SUCK. I'll watch the whole thing just to see if I'm right and I'm doing something else while it's on. How do these films get made? There are SO many god scripts out there. Ok so I got the cop did it wrong...I fell for exactly what they were doing, now I realize it was meant to trick you. Still a terribly stupid waste of time.
This film is chock full of talented actors but the person that I was most impressed by is Channing Tatum. he is a KICK ASS actor and played his part SO well it was scary! I found this film extremely depressing, but a hauntingly accurate depiction of oppressed Queens in the 70's-80's.
How the hell did this movie get such a high score? It's a slice of life that goes no where! it was exactly what you'd expect form a pretentious hipster movie about nothing of substance. there's a lack of continuity and just plain leaves you wondering wtf just happened and what exactly is happening? lame and disappointing.
