North
North(2009)
½

Remember Elling? If you liked it, you are going to like this movie too. More strange characters out of the high North. It is a Road Movie! It is hilariously funny, the laughing out loud kind! Also the cinematography with the winter landscapes of the North are breathtaking. Go see it!

Argo
Argo(2012)

OhmyGod! I don't think it is possible to make a movie more suspenseful and riveting as this one! Excellent film making skills by Ben Affleck! I was at the edge of my seat from the first minute and sometimes it got so bad I could hardly watch. I didn't help to know that the movie is based on a true story either, it only made things worse! Great movie!

Skyfall
Skyfall(2012)

Good, solid Bond movie! I loved the opening sequence in Istanbuhl. That was way cool! Judi Dench was fantastic as always, sorry to find out this will be her last James Bond. Silva is viciously brilliant as the bad guy: too bad bad guys never last! I also liked who the character of James Bond gets developed further though in my opinion his selfpity/sulking period on an exotic beach with drinking contests is silly. The beautiful woman this time around is forgettable: talk about overacting!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower
½

Good movie about teenagers having a hard time growing up, fitting in and finding out who they are. I liked the movie though I thought at times it was too much drama. I think to movie would have been better, more realistic and have made a more profound statement if it had not been for all the abuse and drama.

Welcome to the Sticks
½

After having been told by some many people just how funny this movie was, I finally watched it on DVD. It was a laugh and fun to watch but it doesn't make my all time favorite list.

Twilight
Twilight(2008)

Yeah, what can I say: stick to the books?

The Ides of March

Great cast and solid acting make this an interesting movie to watch. Nothing upbeat about this movie, I guess it hits to close to home.

2 Days in New York
½

Wow, there is a lot of very fast talked dialogue in this movie! It is funny and a bit off the wall. Very entertaining.

Marley
Marley(2012)

Great movie about Bob Marley. It tells his story from a lot of different angles: wonderful interviews with his children, wives, fellow musicians and friends. Unfortunately there wasn't enough of his music in the film though.

Un cuento chino (Chinese Take-Out)

I loved this movie! It is funny and touching and Richardo Darin is brilliant as allways! I promise this is a feel good movie of the best sort. It plays in Buenos Aires as an added bonus and I sure loved listening to Spanish Argentia style!

Midnight in Paris

I loved the movie though I have to admit that I probably did not get all the historic references. But I thought Brody was perfect as Salvador!

Happy Feet
Happy Feet(2006)

loved the music and the animation but sometimes it was a little bit too educational!

The Adventures of Tintin

It started really great! Couldn't get enough of just looking around this 3D World. So well done, the animation and the sets. Then unfortunately instead of making this more of a mystery or detective story it turns into an overblown action movie! I loved the characters though and there were some really good and funny one liners! I hope the sequel will be more story and sets and less action!

Contagion
Contagion(2011)

Wow, this movie is disturbing on so many levels! The movie tells the story of how a deadly virus spreads all over the world and kills millions of people. There is no Hollywood grandstanding here, but a brutal, emotionless account of how such an event could play out. That is what is disturbing. The movie is brilliantly made but I wouldn't call it entertainment.....

The Tree of Life

I suffered through the whole 2 hr and 18 minutes of voice over nothingness and was glad when it was finally over, even at this point not getting upset at the overly obviously closing shot of a bridge!

Water for Elephants
½

When there is no drama in the drama, no sparkle in the romance and the main character has but one unhappy facial expression a movie about a circus moving from town to town becomes rather boring no matter the fine photography.

True Grit
True Grit(2010)
½

Whatever happened to the stoic and silent western heros like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood? Here we get a babbling Jef Bridges and that just doesn't do it for me. Sorry!

Black Swan
Black Swan(2010)

Jesus! This movie is very disturbing and it is not possible to watch it and not be affected by it. Natalie Portman plays a very shy, insecure but extremely ambitious ballet dancer. She deserves all the praise she gets for this! Her performance is outstanding!

Welcome to the Rileys

I like James Gandolfini. That is why I went to see this movie. As usual he puts in a great performances but so do Melissa Leo and surprisingly Kristen Stewart. The movie tells the story of a couple trying to get over the death of their daughter. The story isn't always very convincing but it helps to have New Orleans as the background.

Me, Too (Yo, tambien)
½

Good movie without Hollywood kitsch exploring the question if it is possible for someone with Down syndrome to love a 'normal' person and vice versa. The movie is funny and moving at the same time but also entertaining.

Nine Queens (Nueve reinas)
½

Nueve reinas is a con movie, made in Argentina. I went to see it, because the description said: 'a good heist movie, which Hollywood is sure to fuck up in the remake'. It is a typical con movie where of course you can't trust anyone. Nothing you haven't seen before but well acted, entertaining and with Buenos Aires as a background who would want to miss it?

The Secret in Their Eyes (El Secreto de Sus Ojos)

If you only see one movie this year, it ought to be this one! It is fantastic, original, intelligent, suspenseful, political, romantic, funny and deeply moving all in one. The characters are all interesting and convincing and the acting is superb. The story entangles just in the right pace with twists and turns that don't feel constructed but skillfully sequenced. A true masterpiece.

Date Night
Date Night(2010)
½

It did not live up to the previews but then comedies very rarely do. Still it got a few laughs and it was entertaining enough for a rainy night.

Sex and the City 2
½

Making a sequel is not always a good idea, especially if you don't have a story to tell. I found a lot of this movie in very poor taste and it is certainly lacking the ground breaking and exciting spirit of the TV show!

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Flickan som lekte med elden)

some books are not meant to be movies. READ THE BOOK!

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest

some books are not meant to be movies. READ THE BOOK!

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

some books are not meant to be movies! Read the book!

Robin Hood
Robin Hood(2010)
½

So Ridley Scott did a prequel to Robin Hood. It has nothing to do with the Robin Hood I know. It took me almost 3/4 of the film to figure this out. This is just another big budget action movie and since they couldn't come up with a new hero they decided it had to be Robin Hood. Of course the action is well done, especially the photography, but I had wanted to see Robin Hood: funny sidekicks, witty dialogue and romance.

Brothers
Brothers(2009)
½

Superb acting is what makes this movie work. Tobey Maguire especially great in a very moving and believable performance. The movie does not give any answers, but stats some obvious truths: if you hate yourself you can't love or be loved. It is easier to blame others than facing your own problems. And violence doesn't solve the problem.

La Tigra, Chaco

Very quite, subtle movie about the small town of La Tigra in Chaco, Argentina. Life in this town moves very slow. The cast is a good mix of local amateurs and professional actors from Buenos Aires. You can't help but fall in love with this place. It is captured very lovingly by telling the story of Esteban who comes home to visit his dad. Since his dad is out of town for a couple of days, he can't help but wait and in doing so falls for the place.

When You're Strange
½

Well done documentary about Jim Morrison and the Doors. It includes footage of a film Jim Morrison made and stared in. At first the mixture between scenes from this film and the actual story is a bit bewildering. Still the film offers a good glimpse into the history of the band but it does not answer any questions as to the sad end!

Sin Nombre
Sin Nombre(2009)

Very impressive debut by director Cary Fukunaga. Brutal because realistic and yet elegant and heartbreaking. Equal parts Shakespearedan tragedy and neo-western and mob movie.
It is the story of two teenagers: A shy, quite girl from Honduras and an introverted gang member from Chiapas. Both reluctantly set out on the dramatic journey North to the US. No happy end is possible or likely here! The cinematography is wonderfully done and the score adds to the pictures.

The Blind Side

The reason this movie works is because we know it to be a true story. Otherwise we would dismiss the whole thing as yet another sentimental Disney family movie, however without the overcoming of some grave event. As a matter of fact, nothing ever goes wrong in this movie. Everyone behave exactly they way they should: generous, understanding, respectful and loving. Wouldn't it be great if this really was true?

The Men Who Stare at Goats
½

"The Men Who Stare at Goats": "More of this is true than you would believe". Is what the movie claims. I don't know about that, but the movie is very funny! Weather it is situation comedy or when Cassedy (George Clooney) a army officer with paranormal powers explains to Ewan McGregor what it takes to be a Jedi Warrior! Kevin Spacy is also brilliant. Unfortunately the screenwriters failed to come up with a convincing end to their story, so disregard the last 5 minutes of the flick and you will have a good time!

An Education
An Education(2009)

Experience is what you get, if you don't get what you want! It is a coming-of-age story which could not happen like this any more. It is based on a true story! It is fascinating to watch how a 16 year old girl gets drawn into a relationship with a much older man. There are a lot of questions this movie raises. But I like how the experience does not damage the girl, but makes her stronger. Carey Mulligan is who makes this movie work. Very interesting to watch.

Crazy Heart
Crazy Heart(2009)

Very realistic movie about an alcoholic country music player at the bottom end of his career. Jeff Bridges won the Oscar for best actor for playing the role of the broken country music singer Bad Blake. He does so very convincingly but I do wonder if it is do to his acting skills or if he was just being himself. The story is nothing new: alcoholic falls in love, screws it up and cleans up his act to get a second chance. I found the story of Jean, far more interesting. Single Mom falls for charming, alcoholic country player and against her better judgement thinks this just might work. When he screws it up, she walks away and sticks to that decision.
Good acting, surprisingly even by Colin Farrell!

Shutter Island

This is a thriller, make no mistake! Martin Scrocesi delivers. You are on the edge of your seat from the very beginning and the music makes it clear, that it is going to be an intense experience.
But why exactly? After all it is just two US marshals going to an island to track down an escaped patient. What could be scary about that? Soon it becomes clear that this is a very spooky place and that one of the marshals has some serious issues in the past. The docâ??s and employs on the island are the bad guys, or are they? The whole movie is brilliantly done, never boring and only at the very end do all the puzzles fall perfectly into place, or do they?
Go see it! You need to find out!

Up in the Air
½

Not the masterpiece everyone makes this out to be, but a good movie with great actors and for once without a cute Hollywood Happy End.
Clooney is brilliant in disappearing inside the role of Ryan Bingham. Not once in the whole movie does the 'ueber'-persona of Clooney the sexiest man alive get in the way of the character. The character is a loner by choice has mastered traveling with as little baggage as possible. Tragically once he discovers what he would like to fill his backpack with, this is not possible. The movie though great at capturing the reality of Ryan Bingham fails at provoke an emotional response to his sad life.

The Ghost Writer
½

Roman Polanski delivers a very interesting political thriller. Acting is superb as are the settings and the mood is captured to perfection.
It is a movie made by a man who knows how to make good movies. A thriller which builds up suspense without having to rely on cheap shock and action.
As I said, the acting is superb. It fills the holes and glosses over the obvious questions: like how come the 'Ghost Writer' who is supposed to be a greenhorn knows so much about evading the bad guys. Or what the hell was going on during the rainy night when Ghost and wife are alone in the house!
I also loved the funny/spooky side characters in form of gardener and maid.
One last thought: might Roman Polanski be implying to his situation by depicting a guy who has to hide from a trial?

Sherlock Holmes
½

Not your typical Sherlock Holmes flick. This one is vamped up for the action flick devotees. As an action movie it works great! The chemistry between Holmes and Watson is what makes this movie work. Very, very entertaining if you are not expecting a Sherlock Holmes movie!

It's Complicated
½

Perfect movie for a 'girls night out'! Thanks Carla and Sandra! Nancy Meyers continues where she left of with " "Something's Gotta Give" (2003) and "What Women Want" (2000). She is doing funny movies about middle-aged people having a complicated love life. After pairing Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson, Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt it is now up to Streep, Baldwin and Martin to deliver the goods. I loved Streep and (surprise) Baldwin, but found Martin sadly lacking. However a very funny sidekick was John Krasinski, playing the son-in-law in possession of way too much information. I had a lot of laughs and and enjoyed the movie.

p.s.: hey City Boy, this is Alec Baldwin not 'The Dude' Jeff Bridges!

The Box
The Box(2009)
½

The idea for the movie is brilliant: a box with a red button gets dropped of on the doorstep of a family. Press the button and you get a million dollars in cash, but someone you don't know will get killed.
Unfortunately the story then takes a lot of twists and turns, which are not only hard to follow but sadly not as interesting as the first concept.
Only funny and truly memorable thing about the movie were the hideous wallpapers!

Avatar
Avatar(2009)

If seen in 3D this movie is mind blowing! It is spectacular to walk and fly through this imaginary world on a moon far away. The animals and plants found there really come to life. There was a lot of attention to detail, which gives you a lot to explore.
While the imagery of the movie really drew me in, the story did nothing for me and I also never really warmed to any of the characters.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
½

Sorry to say that this movie did not leave a big impression. It wasn't funny and it seemed to drag on for a long time. Nothing new was added to the same old story and in the end I was none the wiser.

Soul Kitchen
Soul Kitchen(2010)
½

Entertaining but I am sure you can catch this one soon on TV. No need to go to the movies for it!

The Accidental Husband
½

Jeffery Dean Morgan is hot, unfortunately the movie is not!

2012
2012(2009)

Yet another doomsday movie! This one delivers on the CGI with some really cool stuff. But other than that

Knowing
Knowing(2009)

Oh please! Give us a break! Would somebody please think of something more original and less pathetic?

District 9
District 9(2009)
½

Raw, brutal, compelling and original ........thank you Peter Jackson!

Star Trek
Star Trek(2009)
½

Best Star Trek ever! Funny, witty and a cast who has chemistry. I want to be on that Enterprise as well! Too bad it is one of those time travel story lines which are a bit tedious to follow. But I loved the movie, can't wait for the next one......

Julie & Julia

Wonderful movie, touching and very funny! Excellent performance by Meryl Streep. Do not go to this movie hungry that would be torture!

The Proposal
The Proposal(2009)
½

entertaining, some times even funny, predictable ´no-brainer´. Perfect for a rainy day.

Things We Lost in the Fire
½

Excellent performance by Benicio Del Toro! Amazing how he depicts emotions and captures the off beat movements of an addict! The movie refuses to take the normal Hollywood Path by avoiding a 'happy end' with the two main characters falling in love and living happily ever after. Well done!

Stardust
Stardust(2007)
½

A good fairy tale movie with a brilliant Michelle Pfeiffer.

Beowulf
Beowulf(2007)
½

Humans still do not look 100% convincing in CGI, but in this movie it works pretty good. It makes for a very interesting mix between animation and a real movie. Some of the scenes were extremely disturbing and disgusting. Especially when Grendel attacks the Dans at the party. Other scenes are really funny but over the top: Beowulf stripping in front of the queen to fight naked?
I thought Beowulf was unfortunately the one character that was badly cast and not very convincing.
I liked the ending of the movie as it could go either way. Do we ever really learn?

Angels & Demons
½

Certain books just don't translate to the screen: as Angels and Deamons for example. It is too complicated to be a good action movie and not deep enough to be anything else. Tom Hanks give s a solid performance but what is Ayelet Zurer doing? Read the book, skip the movie!

X-Men Origins - Wolverine
½

Great movie! Very exciting story line with lots of twists and turns. Does a good job as a prequel explaining the conections between the characters. Great entertainment!

Red Rock West

Not a bad ´noir´cowboy movie, if you so want. Dennis Hopper´s performance is a bit of a disappointment but the movie certainly keeps you entertained.

Constantine
Constantine(2005)

Keanu is back playing a character dressed in black, remember Matrix? But in this movie he adds some sly humor to it and I almost hate to say this, it works! The movie has a very interesting storyline and great atmosphere! It keeps you glued to the screen!

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
½

It is difficult to follow this movie, as sometimes it is hard to tell what is flashback and what is happening now. There are interesting characters in the movie, but the movie fails them. Could have been good.

The Hairdresser's Husband

Wonderful movie. Everybody should see it! Funny, tender, sensual, sexy and yet so sad!

Convicted
Convicted(2005)

This movie has a very interesting story line. Unfortunately they can't get this to work. But it is a new look, outside look at death-row, far from Hollywood style.

The Lake House

Airplane movie, thank god. Just barley ok to pass the time. The story doesn't make sense and the acting sucks!

The Reader
The Reader(2008)

Well deserved Ocsar for Kate Winslet. Excellent performance. The story is very well told. It is not easy to view this movie as it is disturbing on many levels and stayed with me for quite some time. Makes you want to read the book as well.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
½

What a boring movie! If I hadn't been on plane I would have walked out. Lousy acting as well. How many times does Keanu think he can get away with playing the same type?

Milk
Milk(2008)
½

Excellent movie! Sean Penn is doing an incredible job in depicting the character of Harvey Milk! The movie is a very well done biographie and tells the story of the gay movement in San Fransicso very realistically. Shocking to see what a struggle it was (still is?) to get people to except gay persons as equals. The movie is never boring even though it is 2 hours long. Very much worth watching!

Doubt
Doubt(2008)

Boring, overacted and lousy take on a very controversial subject.

Slumdog Millionaire
½

Great movie! Interesting story line and great sets. A good but not a realistic depection of live in the slums of India.

Changeling
Changeling(2008)
½

Incredible story! The set decorations are done with great care for details. The movie is unnerving and disturbing. But some scenes are more than over done and at times the film just drags on.

Max Payne
Max Payne(2008)

It was sooooo bad, I almost walked out! Which is saying a lot!

Righteous Kill

Too bad. It is Robert de Niro and Al Pacino in it, but there is no chemistry, no story, no wit and certainly no suspense. Skip it!

Flawless
Flawless(2008)
½

A bit slow at times, but otherwise entertaining hist movie. Ending did take me by surprise.

Then She Found Me
½

Funny and interesting at the same time. Great acting by Helen Hunt and Bette Midler. I loved the soundtrack as well. Go see it!

Body of Lies
Body of Lies(2008)

A solid film. Well done and getting the settings right. But all in all a bit boring and too long. The plot is nothing new, typical spy movie.

Blindness
Blindness(2008)

At first kind of boring, but then the images really start getting to you. I think it was disturbing and oddly fascinating to watch. It is worth checking out.

The Women
The Women(2008)

Boring movie dishing up all the normal cliches about poor women not getting along with men. Get real!

Nights in Rodanthe

Nothing new, often times boring and so I would have to say stay away. Loved the hotel on the beach though. Looks great!

The Bank Job
The Bank Job(2008)
½

Very interesting story. All the more so, because it is based on a true story. Unbelievable, live does write the best scripts! Fun to watch, well done and totally realistic. Captures the 70s just perfect.

Quantum of Solace

Beautifully and artefully done. The set locations and settings are stunning. But the Bond girls suck! Not one of them is convincing. Also the story is somewhat lacking. Great action scenes. Over all it is entertaining but not really a Bond movie!

American Gangster
½

Very good movie with a solid performace by both Russel Crowe and Denzel Washington. Very well done.

The Dark Knight

I was really looking forward to this movie. But when I finally saw it, I was disappointed. What is all the fuss about? It starts out really slow. Batman is not convincing in his pain or whatever. I admit that Heath Ledger puts in a stunning performance. But this sadly can´t save this movie!

Sex and the City

It is too long. It had its moments, but over all I thought the series was far better.

Charlie Wilson's War

Great movie! Interesting subject, great acting and witty dialogue. Loved it! Will remember the line about the ZEN master forever!

WALL-E
WALL-E(2008)

Very cute and moving. The characters are instantly likable. It is an upbeat story without being overly sweet. Well done!

Ratatouille
Ratatouille(2007)
½

It had its moments, some funny lines. But the characters did not really grow on me. Animation was very well done.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

The sequel does for once not disappoint. Fun to watch!

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Love it! Great movie! Love the soundtrack and the pace of the movie. Great humor and super acting by Johny Deep.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End

I like the humor and the almost surreal situations. It is hard to follow the story line as it is rather complicated with a lot of twists and turns. Very entertaining.

Something's Gotta Give

Entertaining and sometimes funny. Good for a lazy afternoon.

Saint Ralph
Saint Ralph(2005)

A feel good movie. Must see for anybody who is also a runner. I liked the kid. The story although at times horribly predictable does hold some surprises.

The Lost City
½

Man this movie was boring! Andy Garcia is sooooo lame! There is no chemistry between him and his love interest and all through the movie you just can't warm up to any of the characters! Lame

The Happening
½

Not the best movie I have ever seen. Creepy yes, but at times quite. Not much suspense and the acting was lousy.

Pitch Black
Pitch Black(2000)

One of the best sci-fi movies I have ever seen. Very intense, interesting story and solid actiong.

Juno
Juno(2007)

Like the soundtrack and the witty dialogue. But it felt unreal. Does anyone really talk like that? Refreshing look at an old problem.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

I found it was a pretty lame movie. I wish people would stop trying to imitate Peter Jackson. It does not work, come with your own ideas on how to make a fantasy movie work, please!
Oh yeah, and what is with that accent from the Caspian prince, it comes and goes....

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
½

Very entertaining movie! I loved it. This is what happens when Indy meets ET! Hope this is not the last installment in the series!

Red Dragon
Red Dragon(2002)

I liked this movie. The acting was great all around. The story was told very well, keeping the suspense going. Very entertaining.

Revenge
Revenge(1990)

Bad acting, stupid story serving up stereotypes. Why would you want to see this? It is a was of time!

Fool's Gold
Fool's Gold(2008)

It is not really an action movie and it is not really a comedy either. I guess this movie was made so that Matthew could once again take his shirt off!

Grace Is Gone

Solid acting by John Cusack and from O' Keefe and Bednarczyk as his daughters. The story sometimes does not ring true. But there are moments that are incredibly touching. How do you explain things like this to children and why should you have to?

Speed Racer
Speed Racer(2008)

ok,movie! It looked better in the previews and normally Kevin Spacy is a solid bet. This was not the case.

Diary of the Dead

Keeping in mind I am not a great fan of zombie or gore movies, this still is one of the worst one I have seen. Nothing new and nothing good.

Jumper
Jumper(2008)
½

I hate movies which don't bother to tell a whole story, just because the sequel is already in the making. The idea is original but that is the only good thing that can be said about the movie.

P.S. I Love You

I thought I was going to hate this movie, but I liked it. It had funny parts and the story is well told. They did a good job in showing the love between Holly and Gerry.

The Darjeeling Limited

It is good for some laughs. Also if you miss India you will love some scenes and the landscape. But over all the story fails and the spiritual journey never happens. That is a shame.

The Hunting Party

In my opinion this movie is really bad. Lousy acting, stupid story and dumb dialogs. Too bad, because an intelligent movie dealing with war criminals is desperately needed!

Angel-A
Angel-A(2005)
½

Great acting, very funny, if a little over the top at the end. I personally did not like the ending. But I loved the idea of an angel being a femme fatal. Go see it!

No Country for Old Men
½

I loved this movie. I thought it was both funny, dark and full of suspense . Great acting too, especially by Thommy Lee Jones.

I'm Not There

Way over the top of my head. Maybe if you know a lot about Bob Dylan this movie will make sense. Me I would have to watch it more than once to get it. So it is something for DVD. Cate Blanchette's performance is outstanding,

There Will Be Blood

Very disturbing movie! Can't really say I liked it. But still you can't help but watch in amazement until the very brutal end. The soundtrack is very intense and unnerving. DDL's acting is impressive.

Into the Wild

Extraordinary movie! The story is very well told. Looking at what has happened not just from Chrisâ??s point of view, but also from his sisterâ??s who gets left behind. I also loved the characters that Chris meets along the way. The cinematography is just fantastic. Really wants you to go out there!

Eastern Promises

Great movie, very intense. Viggo is doing an outstanding job. The movie is also very brutal and graphic.

Blindsight
Blindsight(2006)

Atonement
Atonement(2007)
