Matt's Review of The Descendants
"The Descendants" is a strange and unique film (and not just because it's an emotional drama written by the guy who plays Dean Pelton on "Community"). It's beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and funny, but at the same time very simple, despite its subject matter. It may be too slow for some, but I loved its laid-back approach to storytelling. George Clooney doles out an exceptional performance as a less-than-perfect father who must bring his family together and try to make the best of a heart-breaking and difficult situation; or rather, the numerous bad situations toppling upon each other.
This is a mature drama, not for kids; not necessarily because it's inappropriate, but because of its themes, dealing with adultery and betrayal. It's a heartfelt character study that doesn't gloss over the messy situations in life. It's not a perfect film (it's a bit slow, there's some unnecessary language coming from kids, and the guy who plays Sid is exceptionally annoying) but "The Descendants" is a moving film about family with some laughs and tears along the way.
