Matt's Review of Lee Daniels' The Butler
Lee Daniels' The Butler(2013)
Full of lofty ambitions and fueled by a heartfelt piece of American History, "The Butler" is a sentimental journey through the Civil Rights movement.
Though it tries its hardest to be the important film it's subject deserves, "The Butler" just never gives enough attention to actual history. Too much time is spent fictionalizing certain aspects and viewpoints of it. On top of that, the final act of the film becomes so inappropriately political that it loses any resonance it had up to that point. If "The Butler" didn't feature Forest Whitaker's award-worthy performance, there would hardly be much to recommend here.
Unfortunately, even past all its good aspects, "The Butler" feels like a contrived and predictable version of what could have been a better film.
