Matt's Review of Flight
This character study of a deeply broken man, and his search for redemption, features Denzel Washington at his finest. Pilot Whip Whitaker is a man at the end of himself: an alcoholic strung out on drugs, struggling to find purpose as he lives a lonely life. While it may look like your classic disaster thriller, the plane crash in "Flight" is just a backdrop for a more human story, a study of a man's soul. It's not a "fun" movie, but it is a rewarding one.
Unfortunately, a couple unnecessarily explicit scenes towards the beginning will keep many away from this one (and rightfully so for most). It's your run-of-the-mill drama in some parts; but as a film, this story of a broken man's struggle for freedom touched me in a way few others do.
