It's hard to imagine a better film -- with romance denied, the war edging into places that had seemed "beyond it," all of the weight of the moral decisions to "sit it out" and to "be engaged" no matter what the risk -- inform this film. Without the emotional impact of the devastation of WWII weighing on it, this film would have been a slight confection, a love lost and love regained and lost again picture. But, it's so much more than that....

Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway make a passable comedy duo in this entertaining send up of spy flicks. Carell doesn't try to be the same awkward, bumbling character Don Adams portrayed, which worked fine. Instead, he was a geeky desk jockey finally able to work in the field (it's own kind of cliche in these films -- witness "24"). In any case, well written comedic lines and an excellent comedic turn from Carell, muted from his usual goofiness.

Entertaining little flick. Of course it had its predictable moments, and easy jabs at politicians. It stretched credulity at times (Democrats supporting the Right-to-Life movement; Republicans becoming environmentalists), but within the milieu of the "disconnected citizen" film, this holds up pretty well. Stanley Tucci and Kelsey Grammer turn in a good performances, as does a muted Nathan Lane, and even George Lopez (much funnier when someone else is doing the writing!). But it's 12-year-old Madeline Carroll who steals the show.
