Some good scenery, but I thought something was lacking in either/all the script, direction or acting (the pace of the movie is a bit slow, and the love interests of the lead character were not all that convincing).
Nandita Das is definitely a "go-to" actress for difficult and controversial roles, and I greatly admire her for this. This movie is not a "commercial" type of movie...I suppose it is described as a "social" movie in that it addresses social issues, in this case rape, child marriages, and governmental corruption. These are not exactly topics for a typical Friday night date movie!
I would recommend these two Nandita Das films (5 stars, in my opinion): 1947 Earth (Hindi) and Before the Rains (English). These are still serious movies, though.
Somewhat predictable, but with bits of the film using three different languages, plus the flashbacks, I imagine it could be difficult to follow (being at least bi-lingual in two of the three languages would probably help). I saw the "English" short version; although Hrithik plays the role of an Indian man, he speaks fluent English most of the time in this version. I might watch the Indian version on DVD just to see how it is different.
It's a good movie which addresses a number of issues which are cross cultural...but in this case, one can experience life in a barrio in California. This is filmed North of the Border; for an extreme comparison, I would recommend "Sin Nombre," which was filmed last year South of the Border, in much more brutal conditions which reflected a journey to migrate North of the Border.
