This was not exactly what I expected. Sometimes that's good, in this case not so much. While I felt that Steinfeld, Bridges, Damon, Brolin and the rest did a great job with what they were given, the dialogue was distracting, even to them. The forced lack of contractions, even when the "bandits" were speaking didn't come off as comical as I think they were meant to, it came off as bad, in-organic writing. Many times in the beginning I felt like Steinfeld's character was tripping over her own demand for formal speaking style and it sounded more like lines were being delivered rather than Mattie thinking off the top of her head. There were some certainly charming, funny and entertaining moments (I think Bridges is just a brilliant actor) but for the most part it moved slowly (case in point: the 10 minute "ride-to-the-finish" montage at the end). Take from this what you will, I'm probably not the best judge. My favorite all-time Westerns are Pale Rider, Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Fistful of Dollars.
Haven't seen a movie this good in a while. Love the filming, the setting, the place, the time, it all melds into one perfect story telling vehicle that just doesn't come around very often. I didn't blink for an hour and a half.
All performances were strong, the kids did an amazing job despite being covered in blood, cold and violence. It was an amazingly warm, touching and gory movie. Never thought I'd write that sentence.
I would suggest watching it in the original Swedish with the subtitles on. The English overdub borders on cheesy. I'm not usually a fan of subtitles but in this movie it added to the mystery and mystique of it all. Hurry up and see it!
