Prisoners is about two families, the Dovers and Birch's, of which their two 6 year old girls were abducted and the only suspicious person was played by Paul Dano, whose RV was parked not too far from the neighborhood they live in. The Dovers were played by Hugh Jackman and Maria Bello and the Birch's were Viola Davis and Terrence Howard. Detective Loki was assigned to their find the children and the culprits behind the abduction. I believe the strongest performance came from Loki who was played by Jake Gyllenhaal. He should have been nominated for his role who has always been able to solve all his cases. When the police couldn't do anything about it and running out of options Hugh takes action into his own hands and takes Paul Dano as a prisoner. Denis Villeneuve directed a great cast with a great script but it was well worth it.
Operation Christmas Drop is a Netflix movie based on 45 years of joint military missions with Australia, China and Japan. The military base in Guam coordinates to deliver food, supplies, medicine and essential materials to over 20,000 inhabitants in and around the region. This cute rom com flick stars Kat Graham as a congressional aide sent to Guam to see if the base was using unauthorized funds to determine if it is to be closed due to budget cuts. Alex Ludwig the hunk from Vikings acts as the Claus to collect and coordinate the drops on Christmas Day. It was a predictable sweet script that also stars Virginia Madden as Congresswoman who oversees the area to determine the closure of the base. It was good to watch once and to know how the US military keeps their tradition to help those in need.
Warrior involves an estranged family that come together after struggles in life. One brother played by Tom Hardy comes home after serving in the military and went AWOL. Joel Edgerton played the older brother and he distanced himself from his family when his mother died and his father (Nick Norte) who was an alcoholic. Both brothers join the MMA and battle out for the biggest prize money in history. If Rocky was one of best boxing movie of all time then this was the best MMA movie when the two brothers eventually have to face each other. Frank Grillo was Joel's trainer but Nolte trained his other son played by Hardy. Both brothers played convincing boxers, they brought emotion and sentiment to a great movie. Jennifer Morrison played Joel's wife and they were struggling to make ends meet so Joel enters the tournament in order not to lose his family estate. It was such a fine movie, brought me to tears. Definitely add this to your list.
Knives Out is a Rian Johnson directed flick with an all star cast based murder mystery much like an Agartala Christy novel. Daniel Craig played a detective hired to find out who killed the patriarch of the Thrombey empire played by Christopher Plummer. All of the family members have motive to kill the head of the family starting with Jamie Lee Curtis to her husband played by Don Johnson, the other family members included Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Toni Collette. The center of the story is Plummer's caretaker played by Ana de Armas. Rian Johnson for once found a winning formula to make a very good movie. I highly recommend this one it will keep you guessing till the very end.
Nocturnal Animals stars Amy Adams as a famous Los Angeles art gallery owner who received a haunting novel from her ex husband played by Jake Gyllenhaal. The plot was written and directed by fashion designer Tom Ford. I felt like I was watching two movies blended into one. I was not sure if Amy Adams has any part of his novel but I was confused when the story was in the present or part if the past. Armie Hammer had a small role in the movie as Adams current cheating husband while Isla Fisher played Jake's wife in the book. The movie was very graphic to the point where it started out with naked obese women dancing in a museum. It was such a sad movie. I couldn't see myself watching this again.
Killer Elite is based on a true story about a top British mercenary team led by Jason Statham who were dispatched and brought back together because of his mentor played by Robert DeNiro who was kept captive by the country of Oman disgraced sheik. The sheik's three son's were hunted and killed during the war and Jason is brought back into action to bring justice to the three sons that were killed in order to free his mentor along with six million dollars. His murder for hire team is assembled with Dominic Purcell and Adam Young. Along the way his team is caught in a dangerous path by the SAS led by Clive Owen and Ben Mendelsohn. Other than the killings of the British Air Force soldiers the plot became confusing and hard to follow. The story takes us from Australia where we find the beautiful Yvonne Strahovski who played Jadon's love interest. We then find the team travel to England, Middle East and to Paris, France. It was a good action packed tough guy fighting sequences that was fun to watch. To this day the British government has yet to reveal the truth and the actions of those soldiers.
Beirut is about a former US diplomat played by Jon Hamm who was recruited by the CIA to help negotiate a hostage situation during the civil war back in 80's. Hamm finds himself caught between the US agency manipulation and trying to free his friend who he left behind. It seemed like an episode from Homeland with no high speed chases or high flying bullets just smart excellent script with a good cast that also included Rosamund Pike, Mark Pellegrino and Dean Norris. It was so sad to see such a beautiful country torn to pieces. I am afraid I will never see my birthplace in my lifetime. Overall it was a good captivating movie with a good cast.
Pottersville isa small town in New York with a population of not more than 500 people. The town general store is owned by Maynard, played by Michael Shannon who is nice, around the mill loyal citizen who would do anything to help out his town that is ravaged by the economic loss and has gone unnoticed till Maynard finds out his wife played by Christina Hendricks is playing around in animal costumes with the town sheriff played by Ron Perlman. Maynard gets drunk and puts on a gorilla costume and rolls around town causing Bigfoot sightings. The town starts getting recognized by the sighting and gets media attention to bring the people and the town to be recognized again. Thomas Lennon is an Australian reality star who acts as if he is a monster hunter along with local hunter Ian McShane who brings out the truth. The town pulls together to help out Maynard and bring the town together again. At first I thought it was a Christmas movie but it ended being a weird plot with a great cast. It was good cute movie to watch once.
On the Rocks is an Apple TV movie written and directed by Sophia Coppola about an eccentric father Bill Murray who comes back into his daughters life played by Rashida Jones. They spend time together looking to see if Rashida's husband played by Marlon Wayans is cheating on her spying the streets of NY. The story is slow much like Coppola's previous movies but she sure likes to work with Bill Murray. I loved his demeanor and his confidence womanizing every women he comes into contact. My favorite quote was marriage is a bank account the longer you hold to it the more equity you have. I liked the movie it was good to watch once.
Rebecca is a Netflix flick of another adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's 1950 Oscar winning film by the same name staring Armie Hammer as an owner of English manor whose wife named Rebecca had killed herself. Armie meets Lily James and get married and move into the manor. I thought the movie was going to be ghostly and mysterious but ended up being a mystery murder. The movie was ok nothing special, I wouldn't remember it or want to watch it again. Other than the beautiful sceneries it was worth watching.
Darkest Hour is during the time of WWII May 1040 to be precise when the current PM Chamberlain played by Ronald Pickup was forced to resign from his position and replaced by Winston Churchill played by the Oscar winning performance of Gary Oldman. Gary made Winston alive and vibrant on screen during England's darkest times to either negotiate to surrender or fight on. Chamberlain and his supporters were forcing Churchill to dealing with Hitler rather than bringing peace to Europe. Winston was able to rally a nation and the backing of King George VI played by Ben Mendelssohn to defeat Hilter. Such a wonderful movie to bring light of Winston's power and his closeness to President Franklin. Definitely add this to your list.
Rocketman is a biopic of legendary singer Elton John born as Reginald Dwight and his sensational musical story of his life. Taron Egerton did a tremendous job depicting Elton John and singing all of his beautiful music. Each of the songs accurately presenting each of his major occurrences of his life. If I ever meet Elton I would love to give him a big hug and thank him for his songs I grew up loving. it was so sad to his own parents never loved, never gave him a hug, never said i love you. I am sure because of these actions Elton would not have been inspired to write his music. If it wasn't fir his grandmother, he wouldn't have been taught how to play the piano. It was a beautiful film that definitely deserved an Oscar for best picture. The movie captured all of Elton's colorful costumes and the performances at his concerts. Bryce Dallas Howard played Elton's mother and the whole time I couldn't tell who she was. The remaining cast was played by Jamie Bell and Richard Madden as Elton's closest friend and his long time lover to this day. Definitely add this movie to your library.
Holidate is a Netflix romantic comedy flick about a couple played by Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey who only get together and party during holidays. Their chemistry and love for each other was on point, but the story was predictable boy meets girl, boy losses girl and then girl gets boy back in a common over the top way. The jokes are raunchy and thin with an okay cast that included Kristen Chenoweth as the aunt, Frances Fisher as the mother, and Jessica Capshaw as the sister. It was an okay movie that I wouldn't think I would watch it again.
The Interview is set in 2014 where a celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight" hosted by James Franco and produced by Seth Rogen. The duo set an interview with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and end up being recruited by the CIA to assassinate him. Kim Jong-un is played by Randall Park and he was a very convincing ruler. The dynamic duo yet again bring us a comedic view of a political climate that caused the movie to be withdrawn from the big screen. I don't know why it was removed, it was a harmless semi funny flick with a good premise and a wonderful cast. As I was watching it I kept remembering Dennis Rodman meeting with the leader. Unlike all the bad reviews, it was worth watching it once.
Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm is the sequel to the original after 16 plus years staring Sasha Baron Cohen as Borat. The story starts out in Kazakistan where Borat is thrown in jail after his initial failed trip to America. This time around the plot surrounds his family as he flies back to America to gift a present to the VP. He is surprised to see his daughter was packaged to Texas and together they expose the true side of American people's behavior and how they think and act towards others. The plot surrounds the initial stages of the COVID-19 virus hitting the states and I didn't know how they got so close to the VP in Texas and how they exposed Rudy Giuliani. The story had some funny moments but it wasn't as good as the original. It was worth watching it to the end even with a cameo by Tom Hanks. Overall it was okay but this one was a bit too liberal.
What Men Want is a remake of Mel Gibson's movie What Women Want with Taraji P Henson as the female version. The story surrounds Taraji acts as a sports agent who is passed on from getting a promotion and she ends up drinking some odd drink from a fortune teller that gets her to read men's minds. Hanson becomes self centered and ends up hurting those around her instead of helping them all she wants to do is sign the next NBA superstar rookie. The plot was thin and predictable to the point it was dumbfounded. The supporting cast included Aldiss Hodge, Tracy Morgan and cameos from Shaq, Grant Hill, and Mark Cuban. Skip this movie it isn't worth your time.
Killerman stars Liam Hemsworth as a money launderer for the NYC mafia who takes the drug money, buys gold and sells it to the jewelry market in return he is able to get checks to deposit legitimately. Liam and his friend have a side deal that goes wrong with dirty cops on their heals as well as the Croatian Mafia. The title of the movie has nothing to do with the type of character Liam is playing but it refers to his last name. We don't get to know this till the very end. There is no twist in the story other than Liam losing his mind in a terrible car wreck and not knowing he is married to the beautiful Diane Guerrero with a baby on the way. It sure didn't make sense and most of the storyline was boring. Overall it was an okay movie with a subpar cast.
Judy is a biopic of Judy Garland that stars Renee Zellweger during the winter of 1968, 30 years after the release of Wizard of Oz. Renee definitely deserved an Oscar for her role, she brought her to life at the later days of her life in London. The story portrays Judy as a drug addict that Hollywood caused her to work around the clock with little to no sleep and to eat as little as possible just to seem perfect young actress onscreen. The life of Judy Garland was sad and she didn't help herself. Renee also sang the songs herself and gave a great performance. Overall the movie was good to watch once just for Renee's acting.
The Spy Who Dumped Me stars Kate McKinnon and Mila Kunnis as best friends who get caught up in the world of spies and espionage. Kunis falls in love with Justin Theroux who is a spy and he has been hiding a secret from his agency and directs the girls to take a secretive flash drive to Vienna to where they encounter an MI6 agent played by hunk Sam Heughan from Outlander. The story had a few laughs but more better than average action sequences. The chemistry between the girls was pretty good, I could see a sequel in the works. It was good to watch once.
