Dash & Lily is Netflix Christmas series about a cynical Dash and over zealous Lily they trade dates, dreams and desires in a notebook they pass along to each other throughout NYC. Austin Abrams played Dash and Midori Francis played Lily they fall in love thru a series of events to change Dash's beliefs of Christmas. I recommend this one, it's cute, sweet and emotional with Fred Savage at the helm with his direction in four of the episodes. If you want something new you found it with this one, it wasn't cheesy but enjoyable.
LA's Finest: Season One is a Spectrum TV produced show much like Bad Boys but this one is based on an all female cast lead by Gabriel Union and Jessica Alba as cops beating down on corruption in the city. This Jerry Bruckheimer produced series is fun to watch especially with these two hot ladies. There was an episode involving Armenians that I found amusing. It is a good series with a good cast that also included John Salley as a IT guru as well as Ernie Hudson, Zach Gilford and Duane Martin. Each episode is named after movies that Bruckheimer had a hand in making. The first season brought the cast together to stop corruption in the city at the highest level. If you have Spectrum and like Jerry's style of filmmaking I would definitely recommend this series.
The Queen's Gambit is a Netflix limited series that stars Anna Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon who is an orphan at a very young age. Beth is sent to an orphanage and discovers the game of chess. The story takes Beth to a world of addiction and empowerment, as well as pawns and queens. This fictional predictable movie takes us on a journey through life and how Beth discovers herself and her purpose in life. The beautiful cinematography during the 1950's to the late 1960's. We also see her transform from a young lady to a young adult along with the sign of the times with her fashionable clothing that you would want to wear today. The movie brought me back to my childhood days when I used to play the game. It was a very good movie and there are talks there might be a second series in the works.
Ozark Season Three on Netflix continues the story of the Byrde family set six months after the ending of second season where Marty and Wendy Byrde have thrived on their river boat casino venture. This season Wendy's erratic brother moves in and Ruth falls in love with him. He causes trouble with the Kansas City mob and ends up being killed for little to no purpose by the hands of his sister. The ladies in this season fight for control and Wendy puts the family in trouble when she wants to expand the business but Marty wants to hold pat with the FBI on their heels being audited to make sure they are not washing money thru the casino floor. Overall the season was strong but slow at times it was slow and unsatisfying. I hope season four continues with grand master plan to destroy the rival cartel family.
Doom Patrol: Season 1 is a spin-off of the DC Universe superheroes that includes an outcast of heros that can't figure out how to use their newfound powers. Each of them suffered from a gruesome horrible accident that either left them incapacitated and with the help from Dr Niles who is played by Timothy Dalton they come together to form a misfit group of nobody's. They include Crazy Jane, Elasti-girl, Negative Man, and Robot Man each played by a strong cast from the beautiful ladies Diane Guerrero and April Bowlby to Matt Bomer and Brandon Fraser. The storyline is weird, out of sort, freaky kind of like Legion of the Marvel world. The bad guy is played by Alan Tudyk who played Mr. Nobody that controls the minds and images of the superheroes. The story comes to fruition by the end of the season. When I tell you the story is weird it includes a big eye in the sky, a town that moves from place to place, a goat that is wormhole in time. The story is dark, humorous, and sometimes disturbing but overall it is a great series that stands out by itself. Definitely check this out.
Ozark: Season 2 finds our favorite family looking to expand the business to launder more money in the region. This time the cartel sends their best lieutenant who is their lawyer to deal with the Byrdes. Marty Byrde takes a back seat half the season and we see more of the Langmores and Snells with their back stories. The women in this season show more power with Linney at the helm of the family and Julia Garner who wins an Emmy for her role as Ruth Langmore. She is ruthless, righteous, strong independent person who loves her family and would do everything to please them and protect them even though they are villainous. The Snells on the other hand were growing and dealing drugs while playing police and governing the region to help with cause. The Byrde family also deals with their daughter who wants to be emancipated from her own family. The family is also moving ahead politically to bring gambling into the region which causes the Kansas City mob to muscle their way and get a portion of the proceeds from the river boats. Season 3 is going to be interesting, let's see where it takes the family.
We started to watch Schmidt's Creek after the series swept at the awards show so we decided to binge watch it. The series was created, produced and stars the Levy family, Fred, Dan, Sarah and of course Eugene. The story is about a quirky rich family that loses all their fortune and the only place they are able to reside is the city they own in Canada called Schitt's Creek. The town mayor is played by Chris Elliott whose family founded the area. The story is not just comedic humor but the fashion, the clothes that the family wears each day and the acceptance of the LGBT community. Dan Levy's character is acknowledged and accepted by the family but the one good thing that it did better than any other show is that it does not lecture nor dictate that they want things their way. Annie Murphy's character is self centered at the begin inning of the series but we grow to love her quirky ways and she becomes a better person to accept her surroundings and decides to complete her education and market the family business. By season 5, you could tell the series was coming to an end, but overall loved the characters and the show. Definitely check this one out.
Brittania is a series on Epix about 43AD in Britain when The Romans invaded Britain after the time of Julius Caesar. David Morrissey plays an Army General who returns to Britain to finish what Caesar couldn't conquer against the Druids and the Celtic people. This was a good entertaining modern day script with a good cast that includes the beautiful Kelly Reilly as the queen of the Droids. The movie was less historical and more magically entertaining. Can't wait to see what the second season will bring.
Ted Lasso: The First Season is on Apple TV that stars Jason Sudeikis as an American college successful football coach who is hired by an English soccer league team to coach in England. He has no clue about the game and still manages a team with a positive attitude in life even though his life was falling apart. Jason sets an example for each player to believe and to make a difference on the field even when they fail to deliver. The movie reminded me of Major League where ownership took a bunch of nobodies to fail in order hurt the owner's ex husband. The show is perfectly brilliantly created and it grows on you. It is fun to watch and the characters will grow on you. Definitely worth adding this to your list.
Away: Season One is a Netflix series starring Hillary Swank as a mom and captain of a mission headed to Mars. The trip to Mars was very melodramatic, too much dialogue not enough action. It was so hard to watch, slow as hell and unbelievable even since in space tears would never flow down, but hell I couldn't stand it. Josh Charles is the mission control head engineer who can't join the crew because of a hereditary disease. Vivian Wu and Mark Ivanir act as part of the crew representing there respective countries. The storyline was forced and it didn't feel comfortable or genuine. Charles was the only person I cared for, he didn't bring attention to himself and to his disease. The odd thing is that NASA would never put a group of whiny astronauts together are so emotional and can't hold of each other. Such a bad soap opera show in space. Skip this one, not worth your time.
The New Pope is an HBO series that is the continuation of the previous series The Young Pope that stared Jude Law as the pious that lies in a coma and the Catholic Church is in crisis. Vatican votes to add an outsider to be the head of the church and decide on John Malkovich as Pope John Paul III. Great cast, beautiful sceneries, good script and wonderful pope like speeches delivered by Malkovich. Loved the music, the essence that religion isn't perfect but love is. Without love life is shit and fulls of holes. When the Young Pope awakens, John Paul retires into obscurity. Overall good series, loved the music most of all.
Alienist: Angel of Darkness is the second season on TNT about an alienist during the late 19th century New York City. During that time physiatrists were known as alienist and the lead actor was played by Daniel Bruhl as Dr. Kriezler. Bruhl along with his band of investigators lead by Dakota Fanning try to find the missing children that were kidnapped by psychopathic lunatics. Fanning took over this season and led the investigation. The cast also included Luke Evans who still had feelings for Dakota although he was engaged to get married into a rich family that owned the town newspaper. Overall this season took a backseat to the drama and mystery that surrounded the storyline in the first season. It was predictable but still enjoyable with the beautiful city backdrops. Not sure if there will be a third season but I still enjoyed this series.
Godless is a Netflix limited series western seven episode event based set in 1880's in New Mexico territory. Scott Frank wrote and directed this sensational show about an ex-protege Roy Goode played by Jack O'Donnell, who steals his boss's money and runs away with it. The murderous outlaw gang leader is played by Jeff Daniels with a great supporting cast that also included Emmy award winner Merritt Wever. The main character, Roy Goode, finds himself in a town that was devastated by a mining disaster that killed all the town men and we find Wever in charge in lieu because her husband was the town mayor. Daniels is on a vengeance to capture Goode and find his stolen money. The town prepares for an all out attack from over thirty cowboy villains. Each storyline is layered with a backstory which developed the characters we cared to love and to root for them. Overall it was a great series that I loved, it is definitely worth your time.
Better Call Saul is the prequel series to Breaking Bad that stars Bob Odenkirk reprise his role as the infamous lawyer Saul Goodman. Before he became Saul he was known as James McGill and he had an older brother named Chuck McGill, played by Michael McKeon, who hated and resented his younger brother becoming a lawyer much like him. The first three seasons follows Jimmy as he struggles to convince his brother of the good he is doing practicing elderly law. But his brother always saw him as sleezy Jimmy. The cruelness of his brother caused him to loss his license by the end the third season and this last season we see Jimmy struggling to make ends meet and to be able to get back his license to practice again. Jimmy isn't a bad guy at all, he is an all around good guy, with a great heart looking out for his loved ones and his clients.
Along the way, we see how Johnathan Banks became involved with Giancarlo Esposito to help set up the lab to cook the drugs. We also see how his relationship develops with his daughter in law. Looking forward to Season five and there will be a sixth of course in the coming years. Definitely a great series different from Breaking Bad, definitely add this to your library.
Yellowstone is a modern day Western drama series on Paramount Network that stars Kevin Costner as the Hutton Family patriarch that owls the largest parcel of land in Yellowstone. In Season 3 the family faces the challenges of corporate greed in pursuit of the ranch to redevelop the property to create an airport and a resort. The Hutton's have plenty of adversaries having to deal with the Indigenous Americans, Bikers, and anyone else that gets in their way to preserve the family legacy. Overall this is a great series, great cast that includes Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley who discovers that he was adopted into the family, the beautiful Kelly Reilly and Josh Holloway as the -antagonist this season. The third season ended with a cliff hanger leading up to next season and beyond. Definitely add this to your collection.
Upload is an Amazon series created by Office and Parks & Rec Greg Daniels who now brought us this comedy about the chance to choose between having your soul uploaded or being buried. The show is based in the near future where life can be preserved on the net as long as you can continue to be supported in real life. This one stars Ronnie Amwell who is uploaded after a freak auto accident who has an angel looking after his needs and she is played by Andy Allo. They make a great chemistry together but yet Ronnie's girlfriend puts up the funds for his gigs in order to continue his afterlife. Overall great story, wonderful cast, and looking forward to next season.
The Expanse Season 4 starts off several months after Season 3 ended on Sci-fi channel. Amazon picked up the series and I hope there will be more seasons to come because it is one if the best science fiction shows on tv in a long time. Season 4 finds the crew of the Rocinante exploring other Earth like planets using the Rings found by Jim Holden. Much like Stargate the story lans the human population desolated on a planet with extinct ancient alien structures. In the meantime back on Earth there is political fight between several factions. Great cast, wonderful series, great effects that look real. I would definitely recommend to add this to your library.
