Drago?'s Review of Oz the Great and Powerful
OZ the Great and Powerful is a good movie with a few big problems. The biggest issue arises from the fact that the movie tries at once to be a Disney children's movie and a loving tribute to the original. While the 'inside jokes' and callbacks are used sparingly for the benefits of the adults and the film, and feels like it started development in the early 40s there are some major problems with pacing and narrative structure throughout the movie. Of the two main character arcs one feels stunted and the other shallow despite the actors giving it their best and despite their importance the side-characters have a tendency to fade into the background when they're not the focus of a scene.
The movie is otherwise very watchable. It has a trio of fantastic female characters, a likeable lead and some fantastic cgi-enhanced performances from the two 'companion' characters. And speaking of CGI, this is perhaps one of the best and most appropriate uses of over-the-top CGi ever. I might have said it was the best since Avatar if i hadn't seen Life of Pi last year.
All in all, Oz the Great and Powerful is a good if flawed movie for all ages and an absolute must see for fans of the original.
