All About Eve
All About Eve (1950)

The best cast doing the best script directed by a master. "All About Eve" is a perfect film. Bette Davis was not cast to play the charactor of Margo Channing, Claudette Colbert was, but there is not a doubt that Margo is the best performance that Ms. Davis put on film. If Ms. Colbert had not been ill I feel that the film would have lacked without BD. The picture deserved every honor it received plus a few more, namely Davis for Oscar and it deserves its place on the mantle of all-time best films!

The Reader
The Reader (2008)

I knew going into this film that it was going to be a very good piece of work. It is not an overstatement to declare "The Reader" a masterpiece! First the acting, it is some of the most subtle and emotional work that I have seen in a number of years. Winslet, Fiennes and David Kross are good examples of what can be said without a word. I saw expressions on their faces that would make more sense than any phrase or line could ever convey. I am fully convinced that Ms. Winslet is the best actor of her age and perhaps as good as anyone of any other age. David Kross is a very good example of eyes saying everything. He is a good actor and it will be nice to see more of his work in future. Ralph Fiennes as the elder Michael (Kross) is at once distant and then wanting. He has hidden away the feeling of disception that is revealed but still cannot forget the joy of the short summer he spent with Hanna (Winslet) so long ago. For his part he cannot forgive the knowledge of Hanna's past nor let go the passion that that summer seared into him; there is a duality and Fiennes plays it well. Stephen Daldry is on a roll of making great films, and especially films that require women to set the plot. Mr. Daldry may be on his way to becomming our generations example of "a womens director" i.e. the great George Cukor! I know that I do not go into much plot with my rating and that is for a purpose. This picture is a Drama & Historical, anyone that has need for these topics must take the journey for themselves.
