Lawrence Gordon's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

Hidden Figures

Well acted, but somewhat bland fact based story about the African American women who participated in the early years of the space race.

A Monster Calls

Three hankie weeper. Well done!

Concept was intriguing, execution so so

Huppert is a revelation

Nocturnal Animals

A tale of lost love and the choices we make in life. Top notch visual & art design

Portman completely immerses herself in the Kennedy role. A+ performance and a compelling film

Manchester by the Sea

Fantastic performances from Affleck and Williams. Complex human condition subject matter. Highly recommend. One of 2016 best IMHO.

American Pastoral

Oh Ewan, what a lousy movie you've directed & starred in. This one just may nab a handful of Razzies come awards season

The Birth of a Nation

Based only on its cinematic merits, I was 100% mesmerized by this film. Though not perfect storytelling and at times heavy-handed by elevating Turner to a Christ-like savior, the film showed me how deep rooted racism hasn't changed in 200 years.

The Dressmaker

I personally renamed this The Messmaker, because the script & overall tone of the film was horribly uneven. The great Winslet & Judy Davis couldn't do enough to save this film. The only bonus was Liam Hemsworth stripping down to his skivvies!

Queen of Katwe

Uplifting true story. Strong cast.

Hell or High Water

One of my top 10 films of 2016. Jeff Bridges is an acting legend.

Blair Witch
Blair Witch(2016)

21st century technology effectively updates what may basically be considered a remake of the 1999 original. Still contains some effectively scary moments that'll give you the jitters.

10 Cloverfield Lane

Taut script, awesome cast, non stop thrills, gasps, and "what just happened" moments.

Naturalistic performances by the 5 young sisters is what makes this film so watchable.

Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Perfect entertainment in every way. Daisy Ridley: A new star is born.

The Hateful Eight

Daisy Domergue is everything

Mindless fun with two talented comedy gals

Jennifer Lawrence shines in a somewhat uneven script

Goodnight Mommy

Well done, sufficiently creepy, with a good ending twist.

The Big Short

Fantastic storytelling and top notch performances

Serviceable film with good Cranston performance.

Perfect casting & ensemble work. Ruffalo was amazing & deserves recognition during awards season

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs(2015)

Perfect in almost every way

The Visit
The Visit(2015)

Effectively creepy

American Sniper

I can't get the fake baby outta my head

Wild Tales
Wild Tales(2015)

Unusual & very entertaining

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter

Brilliant, tragic, unforgettable

About Elly
About Elly(2015)

Effective portrayal of how despite appearing like a modern society, women are relegated to 2nd class status in Iranian culture.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Eye popping, edge of your seat action sequences. Theron & Hardy are 110% invested in this spectacular reboot.

Oscar Nominated Documentary Shorts

Sad, sadder, saddest. Great films each & every one of them, but the last two really challenged the viewer to refrain from turning away.

Mr. Turner
Mr. Turner(2014)

Great performances, weird film

Still Alice
Still Alice(2015)

Julianne Moore will undoubtedly win the Oscar for this performance

Carell wins the Oscar for creepiest performance of the year

Into the Woods

Bruce's life is now complete

The Imitation Game

Little known story about a true hero of ww 2

What happens when a willing, hungry musician falls prey to a megalomaniac jazz combo conductor. JK Simmons gives the performance of his storied career & Myles Teller proves he's truly an up & comer.

Go. See. This. Film.

Gone Girl
Gone Girl(2014)

Every plot twist felt fresh & not like you'd seen it before. You can't keep your eyes off Rosamunde Pike.

Palo Alto
Palo Alto(2014)

Impressive feature debut by Gia Coppola. Well photographed umpteenth teen angst movie about the disenfranchised privileged youth of the titular Northern California town. Emma Roberts & Jack Kilmer turn in convincing performances.

The Best Offer

When bad films happen to good actors. Geoffrey Rush & Jim Sturgess are way better than this preposterous script. I'm having a difficult time getting to the end of this film.

Unlike any other scripted film ever. Best film of 2014 so far. Not to be missed.

On My Way
On My Way(2014)

Deneuve gets better with age, just like a Bordeaux.

Only Lovers Left Alive

Moody & evocative modern day vampire flick. Swinton is sublime & Hiddleston solders.

August: Osage County

Great performances by Roberts & Streep in a so so script

The Broken Circle Breakdown

2013 best foreign language nominee from Belgium. A powerful character study of love and loss. Great c&w/bluegrass soundtrack. Highly recommended.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Top notch performances by DiCaprio & Hill.

The Great Beauty

Visual stunner. A tad difficult to follow meandering storyline, but some decisive undercuts on Catholicism & the meaning of life.

Saving Mr. Banks

Emma Thompson takes us inside the mind of a lunatic.

Going in to Philomena & not knowing the twist makes for a satisfying movie going experience. Dench will surely secure an Oscar nod for her pitch perfect portrayal of the mother forced to give up her young son at the hands of the Catholic Church.

All Is Lost
All Is Lost(2013)

Totally compelling. A Redford tour de force & capstone to an amazing career

Oscars for everyone!

Entertaining yet a little contrived

Frothy as a latte, but terribly enjoyable

Really good movie! Highly recommended.

Fruitvale Station

Moving and well done depiction of the horrific murder of Oscar Grant. The movie spends time with Oscar in his final days and shows the viewer though not perfect, he in no way deserved to be fatally shot by the police.

20 Feet From Stardom

If you are a music lover, this film is perfect in every way. Dang those girls can sang!

World War Z
World War Z(2013)

If zombie apocalypses are your thang, this kick ass flick's for you. Brad Pitt saves all of mankind with a convincing calm swagger. Would have given 5 stars except for the cliche asthmatic moppet schtick

Frances Ha
Frances Ha(2013)

Frances never seems to get depressed over the state of her late twentysomething life. You'd think it doesn't make sense, but Greta Gerwig does a 100% believable job of portraying her. 86 min of pure delight & highly recommended

Star Trek Into Darkness

A thrill ride from start to finish. Benedict Cumberbatch oozes cold calculating evil, and Chris Pine embodies matinee idol heroics.

The Awakening

Not bad. A little Sixth Sensy.

The Sapphires

Entertaining from start to finish. I hope it gets a wider release. Listen up Harvey!

I've read good reviews about this Sundance favorite. On my must see list.

Les Misérables

Broadway show queen's rejoice!

De rouille et d'os (Rust and Bone)

A unique film about circumstances that bring two people from different worlds together.

A Royal Affair

If this Danish film is playing in your area, I highly recommend it.

Cloud Atlas
Cloud Atlas(2012)

At times a tad self important, but overall entertaining fare

The Sessions
The Sessions(2012)

A truly wonderful film. John Hawkes and Helen Hunt turn in Oscar worthy performances.

Goodman & Arkin, priceless! Go Argofuckyourself!

The Cabin in the Woods

Turns the evil dead concept on its ear. Loved it!

Mirror Mirror

The dwarves were not cute enough!

Moonrise Kingdom

Cute with just enough quirky to set it apart. Bill Murray & Bruce Willis look like they're having fun. Lead kids aren't typical movie moppets, thank goodness.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Extremely Annoying & Incredibly Manipulative

In the Land of Blood and Honey

Try again Angie. This one was just OK.

Every teenager needs to see this movie

The Guard
The Guard(2011)

Don Cheadle & Brendon Gleason are the best law enforcement duo since well, umm, Crockett & Tubbs

Hell and Back Again

So these are the spoils of war in this 2012 oscar nominated documentary

Scorsese goes all ooey gooey on us (in 3D no less). But guess what? It works! Makes The Artist pale in comparison.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Don't piss off Caesar, I'm warning you!

This film should be required viewing for everybody who supports any number of Republican presidential candidate hopefuls.

The Devil Inside

Maybe a NetFlix, but definitely not seeing this in the theater!

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

OMG, this horror comedy sendup is destined for cult status!

Point Blank
Point Blank(2011)

Beats any action thriller coming out of Hollywood.

Never Let Me Go

Love Carey Mulligan, movie eh...

My Week with Marilyn

A wonderful performance by Michelle Williams

Bride Flight
Bride Flight(2011)

This movie watcher wanted to take flight, as far from the screen as he could get.

Often difficult to watch, but ultimately an important film about the power of addiction. Michael Fassbender gives a 100% committed performance as the self destructive Brandon.

Scream 4
Scream 4(2011)

Not quite the franchise reboot I'd hoped for, but a decent thrill ride nonetheless.

Terrific old school style film that doesn't rely on CGI to enhance its impact. The story is perfectly plausible and touches on several modern day issues that are deftly woven into the story. Jennifer Ehle really shines as one of the CDC scientists working on a vaccine. Matt Damon was excellent as usual.

The Trip
The Trip(2011)

Even though the two leads are not stars in the U.S., it's easy to appreciate the humor of The Trip. Their friendship is relatable universally, & their hilarious banter makes for an engaging journey through Northern England.

Life During Wartime

Weird in a good way. Get past Shirley Henderson cast as a NJ Jewess & the rest of the casting is spot on. Ally Sheedy shines in a smallish role as the "black sheep" sister. And Charlotte Rampling's 10 onscreen minutes are perfection.

Joyce McKinney: Good girl gone bad, or pathological lying doninatrix? Watch & form your own opinion.

The Help
The Help(2011)

The Help is 2011's Driving Miss Daisy meets Steel Magnolias. Using the civil rights movement of the early 60's as a canvas, The Help takes us to Jackson, Mississippi, where age old racism runs deep. The film at times takes some broad strokes to make its point, but is an overall entertaining 2+ hour trip back to a time not so long ago.

The Adjustment Bureau

Damon & Blunt's chemistry was what made this film watchable.

Source Code
Source Code(2011)

Non-stop action from 1st to last frame.

Rabbit Hole
Rabbit Hole(2010)

a great film with Oscar caliber performance by Nicole Kidmam
