This is an excellent drama! Peter Fonda is at the top of his game as a widower caring for two granddaughters and his bees. Conflict arrives with dealing with two lowlifes associated with his imprisoned son and daughter-in-law.
This is about as close to the old Mayan civilization as you are going to get. The civilization is in obvious decline and the sacrifices have been ramped up to appease the gods. That, plus the need for slaves, is why the forest people are attacked and taken. Good chase movie, very creative.
A 1969 flick, rated X on release, was the only film in history with that rating to win Academy Awards. Watching it again recently, I found that it held up well through the years in it's themes of naive ambition and desperate friendship in the face of hardship. This is a movie that produces food for thought! Any serious film buff must see this movie.
At first, I couldn't quite grasp what was going on, then I realized the couple are not separated through time, but that the MAIL BOX is acting as a time conduit for their letters! No explaination as to how this has occurred so a suspension of belief has to be practices here. Good movie, though! Well shot and executed. I always like watching Reeves in any role. Bullock is great, too, as usual.
There is a lot to digest with this moving movie. After viewing it once, I find myself playing parts over in my mind. I plan to watch it again because there is more there than one catches in one sitting!
