Macbeth (1971)

MacBeth is one of the best entrees into Shakespeare, short of Romeo & Juliet, especially for boys (to men), but for the ladies ? there?s also one of the Bard?s greatest female characters. So, something for everyone ? well, it?s not a comedy, so that?s missing. Wonderful direction by Polanski to make it a "movie"; although he never bends the language so much as to dumb it down; and adding cinematic touches that are almost impossible on even the biggest stage set. Yes, Polanski took a few liberties but anyone who knows anything about Shakespeare knows that liberties are part of his cannon. I don?t think any of his plays were chiseled in marble.

Mean-spirited and too creepy for my tastes.

Sometimes hard to watch, but cutting edge for its time (and probably still is). A great twist on the heist genre. Taratino is not over-rated as some seem to be claiming.
