Very loosely based in the real story of famous British sky jumping Eddie Edwards, it tell us of his struggle to become an Olympic competitor. From very humble origins Eddie fights against the establishment and lack of funds. He finds a free place to train and a free trainer to achieve his dream to compete, and with many difficulties he thrives.
At this point I must say that reading the real story of Eddie and watching the film is quite a different experience. The plot of the movie has been completely altered to give it a special shine, the real Eddie Edwards was a bit of a joke between the Olympic competitors for his unusual approach to jumping and his lack of success (he was ranked 55) however it did impersonate in a very special way the so called Olympic spirit. Besides this fact the rest of the plot is completely made up, from Petra the pub landlady to Bronson Peary the drunken trainer (and snowplow driver) to the whole set up of the German sky jumping facility. I honestly don't mind because this is the type of story that every body loves, the success of the underdog, the little naive man standing for what he really believes in, an uplifting story of resilience and courage, so what if it isn't 100% real? what if only 20% is true? we still love the character overcoming all the obstacles, that's what makes him a hero. And there is also the anti-hero, Bronson Peary, the failed champion, now an alcoholic with no prospects, and Eddie lifts him up from his 20 year hangover to become a his trainer. I wish it was true. I guess we all wish for the victory of the underdogs, it is so easy to relate... Everything about the movie is a bit cliche, from the training sessions to the belittling of the Norwegian team, we have seen it so many times before... But if you can get pass that you will enjoy this movie for the humorous approach to the unconventional hero.
A horror movie for the little ones with lots of monsters, giant insects and other weird creatures, it is actually more funny than scary and more entertaining than creepy. The plot revolves around the books of real life writer R.L. Stine. Jack Black incarnates the author living in a small town of USA trying to keep his original manuscripts locked as as soon as they are opened the creatures become real. Nosy new next door neighbour, Zach feels an immediate attraction for Hannah, the teenage daughter of the writer, trying to find out if she is well after a fight with her father, Zach inadvertently opens one manuscript triggering the chain of chases and narrow escapes that is the main body of the film.
Lots of special effects and computer generated images fill this movie that has been created almost like a video game where the main characters have to outwit all the monsters one by one. Kids will feel attracted and scared by them, some might say it is a little too fantastic and it is indeed very imaginative but it is in the overall quite enjoyable.
After an accident due to sever weather conditions astronaut and botanist Mark Watney is left for dead by fellow astronauts in a base in Mars. Forced to survive on his own in an hostile environment Mark will produce air and water for his potato plants while making desperate attempts to communicate with Earth.
An original movie with an interesting and unpredictable plot, it never bores you and it keeps you guessing right to the end . As a viewer you feel hooked to Mark and his predicament but also to all the extraordinary efforts made from Earth and NASA to bring him back safe and sound. The alternation between Earth and Mars images is well balanced, and the story feels likely and believable, so much so that I wouldn't call it as sci-fi but an adventure movie. It is a classy and well crafted Hollywood film very relevant to the times we live and the space race.
Aliens try to invade Earth using video game arcade games. The president of USA, Will Cooper hires his childhood friend Sam Brenner to fix the situation as Sam is a former champion of video games and also a mini-loser in life as it has only got a tedious job and no personal life.
The best thing I can say about the movie is that it has impressive special effects but the whole plot seems a mere excuse to display them. Also there is way too much talking and very little action in the first part of the movie. It keeps you wondering why nothing is happening and if you should really stop watching as the first 45 minutes are really boring, the personal challenges of Sam and Will are superfluous, almost like an after thought of the scriptwriters. As a viewer you feel detached and uncaring towards the main characters so you keep wishing for the movie to end or to get interesting which it does but only in the last half hour or so.
