Movie Ratings and Reviews

Manchester by the Sea

Felt overrated at the time.

True Romance
True Romance(1993)

Weird situation where I think I would recommend this movie to most people but I actually stopped watching about 1/3 through.. didn't captivate me, didn't feel like finishing it. But looked like not a bad flick..

Infinitely Polar Bear

I realized pretty quickly this wasn't going to be a 5 star movie but I stuck with it and am glad I did. I wish they would have spent more time upfront selling the relationship and why she fell for him to begin with, and she didn't really need to be cast as a drop dead 10/10 but other than that I enjoyed this flick enough to recommend it, not by a huge margin though.

Barney's Version

Not without it's flaws, but they fade in importance towards the end of the film (and after). Quite an impact on me that I couldn't shake for an entire weekend!

Gone Girl
Gone Girl(2014)

It's no Fight Club and I probably would not have watched this if not started it on a plane or if not for the topical marriage stuff (sorry Ben Affleck). But 3 stars for entertainment value.

Disappointing due to high praise from a few close folks. Definitely does not make it near the top of the genre.

It's Kind of a Funny Story

Would give this an even higher rating for a younger audience.

The One I Love

More like 2.5 stars for entertainment value, but 3 for witty writing and boldly doing something different.

Did make me sit and think after turning it off.

Silver Linings Playbook

likable actors, entertaining in a TV show respect more than what I'm after in a movie..

Inside Llewyn Davis

Reluctantly giving it a mediocre rating for Coen brothers movie. I know there is a lot of substance in the writing but I just couldn't get into the analysis while I was watching it and ultimately it wasn't a great viewing experience. It does leave you thinking about it the next day and I would say I appreciated it more after giving it some thought.

The Master
The Master(2012)

Lasted about 20 mins or so before consensus in just turning it off.

1 star earned simply because a few people actually told us it was decent.

Walk the Line

Liked it a lot for what it was for me- an intro to Johnny Cash.

Not a good sign that I was most interested in seeing more about his real (ex-)wife and not the main plot with Samantha.

But points for being topical, and for the most part executing well on the futuristic setting.

Really wanted to like it.... so much $$ to spend here to make a good movie. Quality actors/production/subject matter gives it a 2 star floor, but the script is a stinker...

The Last Station

its pretty good if you have some knowledge/interest of Tolstoy

+1 for the theatre experience

If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front

solid doc. not that the elf is super interesting or inspiring but it poses some interesting legal sentencing questions to talk about.

A Separation
A Separation(2011)

extra points from someone not familiar to Iran but even so its a great flick

couldn't get past 5 mins this is bad

American Gangster

Couldn't get through it.. about 30 mins in realized it was a gangster wannabe

pretty bad stuff but give it some slack for being a bit of an mma ad and i could see younger people digging it

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

maybe a decent pre-teen flick but very bad if expected to be taken seriously

School for Scoundrels

to say it was a good movie is a bit of a stretch.. but I watched it on a plane and laughed out loud several times..

Super 8
Super 8(2011)

I... liked it. Totally resistant to this genre but the sharp dialogue pulled me in it's favor.

a little of everything, a lot of nothing. very bad.

Please Give
Please Give(2010)

Fantastic stuff.

Midnight in Paris

Was one of those films that I feel had a mediocrity in entertainment value enough to completely stop me from looking with any depth in to what the writer was trying to do with it.

Laura got more of the literary references than I did, but we both just didn't even feel like analysing it afterwards. Not a good sign.

Meek's Cutoff

Movie might not have had a chance because I was so tired when I watched it... and this is not a good choice in those conditions, for sure.

Win Win
Win Win(2011)

Good but not great.

The Boys Are Back

barely made it 30 mins... might pass for drama in some parts but not around here.

Winter's Bone

great flick. overshadowed in indirect resemblance to frozen river (better IMO).

The Social Network

watchable. socially relevant. would recommend just reading the wikipedia article on the story, and saving yourself a few hours.

Black Swan
Black Swan(2010)

dont watch with your mom

The Jammed
The Jammed(2007)

mixed feelings. gotta say i dont really think i would tell someone to watch this whole thing unless theyve been to melbourne which might tip the balance to make it entertaining enough in combo with seeing the locale on film.

good writing/acting but just wasnt hooked in to it enough to feel it was worth the full 90 mins of my time.

would give the director another shot tho if they had something else looking good.

would rate this one pretty high sheerly for the raw footage... good representative glimpse in to the whole us-afghan war.

not put together as much of a movie/film.. and the cuts thrown in after the credits make me question the director's perspective.. but 100% recommend checking this out

watched the first half and had no desire to keep going with it..

A Prophet (Un prophete)

Solid watch.. ends a bit less realistic than it begins but held me the whole way.

Barton Fink
Barton Fink(1991)

Yikes. I don't deny that this is smart.. but sometimes with movies I just don't feel like putting in the effort to try to fully understand where the writer was going with it... and this is one of those cases. Something is wrong with either the picture or me in this case.. but just not enjoyable.

Twelve Monkeys (12 Monkeys)

maybe it was good for its time but going back to watch this was just too painful.. seemed very predictable, and i just cant stand bruce willis so i had to turn it off

Heartbreaker (L'Arnacoeur)

was a bit taken aback at the pace from the outset but couldn't help but love this movie by the about 1/4 in.. took a cheesy hollywood romantic comedy concept and made it work really well.. funny supporting cast

Not for everyone but I loved it

Jack Goes Boating

i can see why the people i was with appreciated the film.. but just not for me. couldnt connect with the characters or the humor in it.

Layer Cake
Layer Cake(2005)

good movie at the surface but in the end just wasn't all that interested in what was happening and could have turned it off at any point and been fine with that.

Collision: Christopher Hitchens vs. Douglas Wilson

excellent. much better than bill maher's religulous or anything comparable.

The Yellow Handkerchief

Couldn't watch more than 20 mins..

La MISSION(2010)

gave it about 20 minutes of my time..

Kill Bill: Volume 2

liked it a bit less than vol.1 but still..

Really good stuff. Recommend reading a bit about the geopolitics of the jaffa area in Israel before watching it.

Exit Through The Gift Shop

Concept made me smile but overall left me wanting to see a documentary on street art..

Get Him to the Greek

Major issues with it but I did chuckle and laugh throughout.

Puff daddy almost ruins the movie being in there..

awkwardly bad dialogue... the premise had potential but man did this movie ever not live up to it..

somewhat entertaining just to see a bunch of local toronto venues featured..

Was excited to watch this one and the first chunk of it is encouraging but it inevitably descends into a repetitive litany of environmental catastrophes (not in a good way)

The Purple Rose of Cairo

i can get the novelty of this concept film but just couldn't bring myself to care much about it

Crimes and Misdemeanors

finally a woodie allen movie i have no reservations about recommending.. (i have not watched his films in chronological order)

Sin Nombre
Sin Nombre(2009)

combination of being a good movie with a stark view in to the real plight of migrant workers makes this a great film..

cool 3D demo.. that's about it tho

District 9
District 9(2009)

dont even try explaining why you think this movie is good. its not.

Blood In, Blood Out (Bound by Honor)

Movie has some novelty for me.. one those things, i liked it but wouldn't recommend it

Cidade dos Homens (City of Men)

i liked it but not as much as city of god, so it is a relative disappointment, yet still worth watching

i don't know why this movie keeps coming up as something people like cuz i think it's terrible

Pineapple Express

not sure if i would find this funny if i watched it under different circumstances.. but i laughed.. a lot.. and so did everyone i was with

Synecdoche, New York

ok walked out of this one.. i'm a kaufman fan and i get that this is a total geek out in movie-making land but come on ..

ya ya sam rockwell was good but this movie had so much potential that it didnt live up to.. hard not to focus on how it couldve been a great movie.

Wendy and Lucy

there were some good aspects to this film but man does it ever suck overall as entertainment..

This Is England

definitely has an indie vibe for better or worse.. i liked it. kid was a compelling lead and being based on a true story gave it an excuse to not blow me away with the screenplay.

The Wackness
The Wackness(2008)

watched about 30 mins of it then just lost any desire to keep going.. disappointing for a flick with ben kingsley in it.

Rescue Dawn
Rescue Dawn(2007)

man i thought herzog was a cool dude.. apparently not. the writing totally sucked.
