muesli2005's Movie Ratings - Rotten Tomatoes

Movie Ratings and Reviews

Kingdom of Heaven

fairly conventional historical revamp.

Black Narcissus

saw it last night and it's 15 hours later and i'm still thinking about it. Beautiful film and a great unrequited love story of two people trying to put their disappointments behind them by never letting themselves be vulnerable again. Whether you join the convent or just give yourself up to an exotic land and all it's sensuality, no one ever really escapes the experiences that make them who they are.

Nothing to Lose

one of the best comedies of the 90's. gold.

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

average comedy. i liked watching kirsten dunst in this for some reason.l

High School U.S.A.

a roger corman-like version of fast times.

cult film potential.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

big summer funtime movie, sidestep the plot holes and you'll be better for it.

State of Grace

gary oldman fans dig this.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

one of bogie's best. get familiar with fred c. dobbs. word.

The Lost World

saw this in a classic theater. i bought into this movie more than many of our modern special effects bonanzas. I think it was because all the actors, which i knew were real live human beings, showed up on the screen sort of herky-jerky every now and again and when the dinosaurs were shown I suspended my disbelief more easily. probably for film buffs only, but well worth it for those of us who love old-timey things.

Battling Butler

human cartoon buster keaton brings it.

i guess i'm in the minority here, but i thought this movie succeeded in showing what a crisis and post-crisis gives rise to: the best and worst of mankind. And it does this better than every zombie film or tv series, even though it's not about zombies. brilliant acting and cinematography all the way around. the best buck 99 movie i've ever purchased.

The Ghost Writer

musty moody minor masterpiece.

kate beckinsale is one of my hollywood crushes, so i'm biased, but yeah, it's a very predictable rom-com.

Gold Coast
Gold Coast(1997)

not that great, but watch if you want to see some Leonard dialogue acted out on the small screen. on second thought, just watch the tv series, Justified, instead.

Double Whammy

uneven but somewhat enjoyable.

Three of Hearts

This movie cracks me up. Billy Baldwin as the male escort with a heart of gold. Dumped girlfriend hiring him to get her girlfriend back. Joe Pantoliano as the the pimp! This film is a mess and I found it entertaining.

Billy Jack
Billy Jack(1971)

a beautiful time capsule. So innocent in its intent.

Unknown Passage: The Dead Moon Story

a philosophy lived and breathed.

The Wrestler
The Wrestler(2008)

overrated, but still good. Rourke is superb.

A Mighty Wind

guest fans will like. it made me chuckle a little bit.

Seven Minutes in Heaven

80's galore, what more do you need?

The Wild Bunch

If you've seen many Woo-era Hong Kong flicks, this might seem relatively tame, but in terms of violence in cinematic history, this is the film that kicked in the door. Fantastic images. Every bit the classic it's made out to be.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

better the second time around. marisa tomei is fantastic, as is michael shannon.

Dirty Pretty Things

Well executed drama with a ill fated romantic element to round it out. Puts the ugly side into right focus, though I thought that if indeed it was realism the writer and director were after, then for sake of plausibility the main characters could have been a bit less angelic. Still a very very good film.

Damsels in Distress

Although a bit too straight-faced farcical at times, Stillman fans should like this.

Clay Pigeons
Clay Pigeons(1998)

holds up well over over ten years later.

They Live by Night

A noirish Romeo and Juliet. Kind of ridiculous, really, but I don't really ever tire of watching it every once in a great while.

East of Sunset

skinny hipster love story. rejoice or not. maybe I got a bad copy of the fllm, but it was as if the audio was a split second behind the video which gave it a dubbed quality, which in turn made the terrible dialogue a little more entertaining than it otherwise might have been.

The Narrow Margin

Classic? Not quite. Damn good and a must see for the noir-head in your family.

Clash by Night

god, so much better than one might think after reading the synopsis. Also, Monroe is great in this one too.

Walking and Talking

keener fans should see this. fans of 90's indie type films should also check this out.

Wolf Creek
Wolf Creek(2005)

i liked how the tone changed from being a road trip love triangle now we're fighting for our lives. I watched the unrated version and didn't it find it too disturbing.

light kink, light noir, light romance, slightly strange. It's not as bad as they say. Watch if you're a Ricci fan.

underrated gem,

Decent film for Samuel L. fans. I was really hyped to watch it since I picked it up at a yard sale and the seller told me it was REALLY good. I found it to be an adequately enjoyable way to while away the afternoon.

The Dark Knight Rises

If you liked the first two, you'll likely dig this. Unless you're a stuffy critic. Sidenote - I liked this movie better than The Avengers. Both are worth seeing.

Garner is great. This movie was fun and that's all it was supposed to be.

Brooklyn's Finest

Worth watching for Wesley and Don. It's the Wire's little brother and nothing more, but it has some nice moments. Definitely not a waste of time.

Bright Lights, Big City

a period piece. I liked Less Than Zero better.

The Lovers of the Arctic Circle (Los Amantes del Círculo Polar) (The Lovers from the North Pole)

too unbelievable. and yes, I'm a romantic. However, as someone who suffered through years and years of missed signals and hopelessness, only to give up too soon, there are aspects of this film that completely hit the mark.

Alice, Sweet Alice (Communion)

OMG, total treat. A creepy doll, weird sexual tension, the most repulsive super in the world, 70's wardrobe, mystery killer in mask and bright yellow rain-coat, man, what's not to like.

The Prodigal Son

Everybody Wing Chung tonight. This film is a fine example of what the kung fu genre has to offer.

No Mercy
No Mercy(1986)

80's cop-as-avenger flick with then rising stars, Kim Basinger and Richard Gere, set in New Orleans and environs featuring some sweaty PG-13 love action. Some of the dialogue is classic, especially the two references to freckles.

I dug it. Mutual love that is mutually sacrificed for the greater good is indeed the truest love of all. The music was nice too. An underrated gem of a movie.

Big Pun: Still Not a Player

No punches pulled in this movie. I don't like big pun, the man, but I appreciate his verses. It's hard not to judge someone for beating their wife and being a boorish jackass in real life. It was rare to see a documentary go so far to paint an honest picture of such a notable figure in the hip-hop community, especially after his unfortunate and untimely demise.

Biggie Smalls is the illest. As a hip hop fan, I enjoyed this movie.

Less Than Zero

great new wave feel. so so movie.

Strangers on a Train

the tennis match scenes, the merry-go-round scene, the opening scene. All good scenes, man.

would have been more interesting if they would have ditched the "they never saw it coming" angle and showed the drama on the other side of the con. jennifer aniston made some believable faces as a slightly guilt ridden grifter.

To Have and Have Not

Yes, it's Bacall and Bogart and yes, that's a wonderful thing.

Body Heat
Body Heat(1981)

A noir update in the most classic sense.

classic 90's horror film.

Il Grido (The Cry)

Life can be emotionally jarring, so much so, that one may lose all bearings and simply fall into the abyss.

Good film.

Waking Ned Devine

Heartwarming and Irish. Beautiful scenery and great little story.

St. Elmo's Fire

Bully for Andrew McCarthy's character. Been there.

Les Mistons (The Brats) (The Kids)

Worth tracking down if you're a Truffaut fan.

I find it interesting that Truffaut said he found the children playing the part of the brats to be acting against their own instincts. He said they were completely uninterested in the girl or the guy who were kissing, etc. He was then inspired to make a film involving kids with a more true-to-life plot and more accurate motivations. That film would be the 400 Blows, basically.

The 400 Blows (Les Quatre cents coups)

Yeah, pretty much perfect. Great stuff.

Love on the Run (L'Amour en fuite)

a bit too pat as as far as endings go, but a really lighthearted wrap of the Doinel chronicles.

Bed & Board (Domicile Conjugal)

the doinel saga is still interesting to me, but this is my least favorite of the bunchl

Nice addition to the genre.

Paranormal Activity

I was more impressed with the naturalness of the acting than anything else. I buy them as real people. Didn't know much about the hype this film received when it came out. I knew it was supposed to be scary from reading the dvd case, so I watched this alone in a windowless basement at night and wasn't really spooked, but I'm a dude. It was an intriguing concept. The alternate ending was much better than the theatrical version - the version's epilogue was cheesy as fuck.

I wish I would have thought of this for only 15k.

Stolen Kisses (Baisers Volés)

I expected more, but I still enjoyed seeing the mishaps and mis-starts of Antoine.

Nirvana Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!

a nice snapshot of a certain time in rock music. definitely worth more than the 49 cents I scored this for.

I buy it to a certain extent, but all the people we root for ended up happy in the end. bullshit, but enjoyable up to that point.

i watched this film because I read that the feelies did the score, but ended up with the feeling that this is what rock and roll is all about really, a hierarchy of cool where bottom feeding is everyone's favorite pastime. I can imagine this film being "reimagined" today across the bridge in Williamsburg.

Worth seeing.

A mess of a movie that could have been better with the last few minutes lopped off, but I really dug Chris Penn and Jeffrey Wright's performances. ResDogLite.

Raw Deal
Raw Deal(1948)

tragic love triangle noir plus Raymond Burr as a pyromaniacal gangster.

Reality Bites

extra star for Gen X "ness".

Naked Killer (Chik loh go yeung)

fuckin' dope. some of the nicest slices I've ever seen. the look, feel, and tone of this thing make it a great little find.

Sullivan's Travels

one of those perfect films and great introduction to veronica lake.

The Spectator (La Spettatrice)

I can relate. it is tragic that the main character has not the courage to follow her emotions all the way through. an untypical film that i was glad to see. a love story that never gets there. it happens so many times. ok, before this gets too personal, I'll stop.

White Irish Drinkers

A sense of time and place you can step into. The plot has heart, but is predictable, but so is life sometimes. I gave it a chance and I'm glad I did.

Brief Encounter

If they haven't already, fans of In the Mood for Love who also happen to be Anglophiles should see this tale of unconsummated love.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

A far-fetched but yet run-of-the-mill investigative unearthing of Nazi history in a well to do respectable family. The plus side is the curious case of the cyber hacker who seems to have the worst luck with men on the safest place for women on the planet! As a side note, I thought the Swedish actress "got" the antisocialness of the character better than the Hollywood version.

All in all, most fans of the book will like this a lot and it will certainly add a welcome car bomb to the raging battle in the field of women's studies.

It will be interesting to see what Fincher does with the rest of the franchise.

Branded to Kill

non-optional viewing. Now I know where Jarmusch borrowed the assassination-via-plumbing gag for Ghostdog.

Well shot, well cut, and well acted. A "what if" scenario that should keep anyone of a certain maturity level well engaged throughout.

The Science of Sleep

This is not a romantic comedy where two basically well-adjusted people overcome some situational obstacle to come together for a happily ever after. No, not all.

Hard to figure what the fuck went wrong with the relationship, why it never gelled the way it could's painful to watch, especially if you've had an awkward crush/friendship with someone and it just doesn't go where it could have, if only there was a little more faith on one or both of parties' part.

Definitely see this if you liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Another galaxy in the Gondry universe.

Must Love Dogs

Slightly better than average rom-com. I liked John Cusack's character. I may pattern myself after it, if it scores chicks like Diane Lane. Joke.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

adorable and true, even if it's predictable. Listening to the commentary by Diane Lane and Laura Dern on the DVD is great if you're a fan of that period in film and music.

See this movie if you have even a passing interest in the riot grrl thing. I swear that the Stains sound like they're on K records. Chicken or egg anyone?

You know how sometimes you see a basketball team make a few too many passes, passing up decent opportunities to score, only to then hurriedly miss the final shot. That's what this film's plot is like - unbelievably complicated to point of being ridiculous. Too clever for its own good. More of a film exercise than an actual heist movie.

On the plus side, there's the patented Mamet dialogue.

not a bad TV movie, but not very good either. At least there weren't any vampires in it.

Rampo Noir (Rampo jigoku)

strange, sometimes beautiful, but definitely more strange than beautiful. Something most people will never watch more than once.

I will knock out Tiger Jones.

Pretty in Pink

Best thing about this movie is how James Spader's character openly smokes whenever he pleases on campus and not once does a faculty member scold him.

If this movie had been made ten years later, Duckie would have been written as Andie's gay sidekick.

Anyway, yeah, this movie makes me cry because the soundtrack is so boss. The end.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring

For me, this film had a healing effect. Learning to live simply and to simply live is the hardest thing, but it is really
the only thing.

First Name - Carmen

another one only for the hardcore JLG fans. Love the use of Tom Waits' music in one scene.

Passion (Godard's Passion)

for the hardcore JLG fan only.

adds to the ritchie's british pulp fiction legacy. enjoyable, but unessential. lock stock and snatch are considerably better.

The Oh in Ohio

kind of reminded me of a couple Sex and the City plots thrown together, however I dig Parker Posey's mannerisms so much that I gave this a 3.

The Real McCoy

kind of touching in a corny way. this movie took itself too seriously, but kim and val do the best they can.

Lovedolls Superstar

It really is a document of a time and of a scene. Watch if you dig punk rock type movies. Otherwise, this movie is about you, but not for you.

Suddenly, Last Summer

Not bad, but not great. If you dig Taylor, then watch this and be entertained by those theatrical monologues that are definitely a relic of the this era of film making.

one of the most unintentionally comic love scenes I've ever seen. The soft metal music which accompanies it makes it golden.

Masculin Feminin

as close to 1960's Paris youth culture as most of us will ever get and for that sense of time and place, I give this a five.

if you dig hal hartley and david lynch, you'll at least like this film. i had zero expectations and was pleasantly surprised. and how can you not like a film starring an actress by the name of Galaxy Craze.

The Rachel Papers

80's film with a bunch of ione skye nudity. I was kind of shocked to see that.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed

plot is full of plotholes, and the movie could have ended with them so much sooner, but then that wouldn't be a feature length film, would it? It's not a waste of time, but I rolled my eyes too many times to watch it again anytime soon. This is no Shallow Grave.

Lawrence of Arabia

considered classic for a reason and should be required watching for anyone who questions why the Arab world distrusts our "help" and general involvement in their affairs.

Matchstick Men

alison lohman and nicolas cage are great together, their final scene makes some of the slower moving sections worth it.

Rebel High
Rebel High(1987)

If seeing mid 80's fashion in all it's big hair, bandana at the knee, and taped eyeglass's glory is your cup of joe and you also want to see ridiculous B-movie plot lines and hands-to-forehead sight-gags, well then, you'll enjoy this movie as much as I did.

Eyes Wide Shut

Beautiful film from Kubrick. His best? No. Worth seeing? Absolutely.

Criminal Hearts

stolen drug money, a hitchhiker, unbridled passion, and m. emmet walsh as a crooked fed = 90's awesome.

compelling, if you pay attention, but I enjoy other Godard films much more.

2 ou 3 Choses que je Sais d'Elle (Two or Three Things I Know About Her)

kind of plodding and overly political, and that was the point, I know, but, but, but....2 or 3 of my favorite images to ever hit the screen. Jean Luc Godard was a watershed event in film history. I intend to watch as many of his films as I can track down. At this point my favorite is Pierrot la fou.

Cruel Intentions

late nineties teen flick that is quite wicked. enjoyable as hell, if for nothing else, sarah michelle gellar's bitch of a character.

Small Time Crooks

skip, unless you're a woody complete-ist.

Better than Schindler's List. Non-CGI creatures rule.

Army of Darkness

probably my least fave of the trilogy. I used to like it a lot more in the early 90's.

The Crew
The Crew(1995)

doesn't make much sense at all. mildly interesting to see Viggo play a Floridian lawyer asshole type. That's about it.
Oh wait, Ray Wise and Grace Zabriskie of Twin Peaks fame reunite here onscreen as a couple, oh for about five minutes. And that's only for the most serious Peakers.

One of Godard's masterpieces.

The Conformist

The Godfather borrowed some of this film's visual magic. So did Miller's Crossing, come to think of it. If you love cinema, see this.

Les Carabiniers

a war film as only Godard could make it. Some parts were overwrought - the postcard scene comes to mind - but overall, yeah, a very scathing satire on the idea of war as a positive experience full of romance and adventure.

Sunset Boulevard

They had me at the dead monkey who gets a coffin.

Lone Star
Lone Star(1996)

I love how Sayles time and time again allows a locale to shine in its own brand of humanity, witholding none of the beauty and none of the warts.

The Underneath

alison elliott rules in this, fuck all those that said she sucks. anyway, i bought this for 50 cents and it surprised me in a good way - a modern film noir, with some real emotions here and there. I had zero expectations and it's not a bad film.

See Criss Cross, for sure.

i give it 4 because it could have been so much worse. I think what I like the most is that this film doesn't even attempt to entertain in a conventional way. It's so personal, it feels like we're eavesdropping on S. Soderbergh's thoughts.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

If you buy into the vibe, it's a hell of a ride.

Born to Win
Born to Win(1971)

better than i thought. there are moments of that sort of gritty 70's attention to "realism" that really add up. The film is a bit uneven, but definitely watchable. In tone, the scenes involving the junkies looking to scam and score reminded me of Bubs and his running partner in The Wire.

Paths of Glory

One of the finest war films of all time.

malk, laundau, norton, tuturro. this is kind of the bomb. definitely a guy's film.

Eastern Promises

i think this film will take the path of such films like State of Grace and become a cherished little gem in the crime family drama genre.

The Crude Oasis

this is not a bad film, it's just not a great film. If you like atmosphere you may find certain sequences quite beautiful, but the story is thin, very thin. this movie was made in the 90's, but seems set in the 80's...but then again it's set in Kansas, so who knows, just sayin'.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

I think that it has its own tone and stays true to J.R.R.'s vision.

Dead Man
Dead Man(1995)

might be jarmusch's best film?

Pierrot le Fou (Pierrot Goes Wild) (Crazy Pete)

post-modern, punk, and anna karina is un/look/away/able.

The Town
The Town(2010)

Interesting heist film.

Killer's Kiss

budding genius. love the gladiator style showdown in the mannequin factory.

Ghost World
Ghost World(2001)

still compelling after all these years.

The Killing
The Killing(1956)

One of the best noirs, period. I almost stood up and cheered when Marie Windsor's character gets hers.

Le samouraï
Le samouraï(1967)

tight atmospheric piece that Jarmusch's Ghostdog paid homage to years later.

Jackie Brown
Jackie Brown(1997)

Quentin should adapt another Leonard novel. I loved this thing when it first hit the screen during the holidays fourteen years ago and I loved it even more this time around. Watch if you haven't seen.

Hollow Triumph (The Scar)

a prelude to the noirish feel of some twilight zone episodes. Joan Bennett is always nice to see onscreen.

The Petrified Forest

I second the existentialism if it matters.....

Kansas City Confidential (The Secret Four)

Not bad..a nice role reversal...ex-con plays policeman...ex-cop plays part of heist meister.

The Second Woman

interesting noirish psychological film.

The Red House

i like allene roberts 'cause she's a pretty and kindhearted '50's girl. word.

Scarlet Street

One of Edward G.'s finest roles.

He Walked by Night

Worth it to me for the bullet extraction scene and the sewer tunnel chase.

An interesting stab at a romantic comedy noir. Certainly not terrible.

The Pom Pom Girls

susan player makes another appearance.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death

I agree with those who tout the movie's mood over its plot.

Blood Mania
Blood Mania(1970)

not that great at all, but a hell of a time capsule of 70's soul-jazz and fashion. And the red-head is a knockout.

Thriller - A Cruel Picture (Thriller - en grym film) (Hooker's Revenge) (They Call Her One Eye)

The hardcore porn aspect threw me and I'm not sure what it adds other than, along with the close up shots of heroin being injected and the eyeball being punctured, being part of a visual motif of penetration.

The badassery of One Eye running around docks in a fringe-lined duster brandishing a shot gun cannot be denied.

I enjoyed this film despite its flaws.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

kind of unforgettable true life tale.

joan fontaine.

The Man Who Loved Women (L'Homme qui Aimait les Femmes)

deeply superficial and superficially deep, worth a look if you like Truffaut. I kind of loved the thing.

the ending nixes a 5 star rating, but a beauty to look at, this one.

David Holzman's Diary

more interesting as a time capsule of random b/w images of late 60's nyc.

Shadow of a Doubt

classic hitchock noir.

The Henry Miller Odyssey

If you're a fan, see it, otherwise, it might just seem boring.

Fay Grim
Fay Grim(2007)

interesting more the 2nd time around, don't know why. parker is kind of awesome in this role.

The Beach Girls

another 80's film. some of the sight gags are downright racist. debra blee is easy on the eyes.

ridiculous, but very 80's. nerds, yuppies, etc.

Mad Youth
Mad Youth(1940)

jitterbug scenes alone give this 4 stars.

a 3 and 1/2 star film that I give 4 stars simply because I'm a Gen Xer.

The Tree of Life

beautiful disjointed..not my fave Malick film, but totally worth seeing a couple of times...perhaps as a visual accessory.

Crank 2: High Voltage

part b movie, part video game, this over the top nutter will possibly go down as one of the finest moments of inspiration of generation text.

American Playhouse

hal hartley's quirky take on the man/woman thing.

The Hangover Part II

same movie, different place

The Next Three Days

a bit implausible, but it makss you think about what people are capable of if they really love someone.

Your Highness

good silly fun.

back and forth between funny and creepy and suspenseful. Worth seeing a few times.

Something Wild

The Feelies are the band at the HIgh School Reunion. Also, a cameo by Su Tissue of the Suburban Lawns that really makes me chuckle. Decent film.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being

the movie is good, the book is great. I think Juliette did a good job of translating Tereza's emotions to film.

Country Blue
Country Blue(1975)

better than bonny and clyde. it abuses cliches to the point of unintentional ephiphany.

Single Room Furnished

A product of its time that has aged in a strange and beautiful way. It is corny, but buried underneath all the melodrama is some truth. It's not really acting, it's like watching little kids acting out our adult nightmares, which makes it all the more heart-wrenching.

Slow Burn
Slow Burn(2007)

you fools, it was really ray liotta/danny luden.

by the numbers, but the point is valid.

City of Ghosts

Music ruled, atmosphere dominates. My cup of tea.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle

Pitch perfect. Mitchum is as good as they say he is in this film. I need to read the book.

extra star for the cinematography.

overly dramatic. good sets.

The Other Man

The twist was totally unnecessary and added nil to the film, but the story did make me think about good ol' love.

Fanny & Alexander

there's some real genius moments here, but not something you're gonna watch every year.

Wilderness Survival For Girls

small cast, surprisingly original.

Turn the River

Why people keep shitting on this movie is beyond me. The ending was true to the tone of the film. Fine acting, a beautiful score, and some dynamite pool shark moments. This film overachieves.

Les Choses de la Vie

Some powerful images, but the film as a whole is fairly pedestrian.

better than "twilight". not as good as "let the right one in".

Flirting With Disaster

Gets better after it gets rolling, but not as good as I expected it to be.

Factory Girl
Factory Girl(2007)

sienna miller does a fine job. interesting if you have any interest in the personalities depicted in the film.

Elmore Leonard liked it, so it was good enough for me to give a go. I wasn't disappointed.

River of Grass

seems unfinished. My least favorite of Reichardt's films. Old Joy and Wendy and Lucy far surpass it in terms of mood and plot..

Scarfies (Crime 101)

a unique film. part morality play, part dark humor, part romance.

if you dug that narrative arc of Breaking Bad where they debate whether to kill the guy in their basement, you'll dig this too.

and for you cool indie rock kids....the clean make an appearance in the film at a club playing their song ,"Tally Ho!".

Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?

A stubborn woman refuses to make an 180,000,000% profit based on her need to feel validated by the art world. She likes all this attention doesn't she? Ultimately, if she had allowed an independent analysis, she might have had her answer, but at this point, I don't think she could handle the possibility that's she's been suckered by a pair of unscrupulous con men who share a stake in the painting's value. If she enlisted the aid of someone other than these two ex-con's as her experts, then I would have more sympathy for her.

Oh well, at least the local country singer wrote a song about her and she drank some beer with her friends at the bar. It doesn't get any better than that, does it?

Empire Records

kimo wills provided marky mark with a template for his entire "actor" persona. This is a lightweight and little better than it gets credit for. The Innocence Mission was on the the soundtrack so it gets 'nuff props for that alone.

All heads wreckanize.

Ken Park
Ken Park(2002)

fucked up beyond belief.

New York Doll

Arthur Kane is an individual, to be sure.

'Marijuana'---The Devil's Weed

a historical curiosity. don't know how this compares to the much more famous Reefer Madness.

25th Hour
25th Hour(2003)

Brilliant. The club scene and the final dream sequence are incredible pieces of montage storytelling. It's hard for me to choose between this film and Mo Better Blues as to which is my favorite Spike Lee Joint.

Brokedown Palace

cloying soundtrack, but an otherwise cautionary tale about the severe legal system one might face being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I wonder how many other cases might be out there, if any. Everyone who is thinking of partying abroad should watch this film.

Live Forever (Live Forever: The Rise and Fall of Brit Pop)

they should just do a documentary on liam. no, seriously, i wish trip hop was explored more in this film. It seems to have held up quite well compared to some of the other sounds of the era.

World Traveler

not bad, but not amazing either.

subtly abounds. Some have called this self-indulgent artsy trash, and I see how it can be viewed that way, but if you're a fan of films like Picnic at Hanging Rock, give this one a look.

Just for Kicks

a little too much of a one-note project, but this is a special treat if you were a child of the 80's.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

not as tight as old boy, but what is?

In Search of a Midnight Kiss

accessible mumblecore. it works well. a really touching story for those of us who have navigated these waters.

battle rappin' via 18th century France.

The Thin Blue Line

one of the best documentaries of all time because it freed a wrongly convicted man from death row.

The Vanishing (Spoorloos)

great little film. love the 80's purely instrumental synth soundtrack too.

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

tired racial humor trying to be "ironic" but ending up moronic. I didn't laugh out loud once. I did smile at the cheetah scene, but that doesn't really save the movie from getting a one half star rating. Hell Dumb and Dumber was smarter than this dross.

Over the Edge

Unbelievable - has to be seen. Trash cinema with a dope ass late 70's soundtrack.

Mutual Appreciation

one of the best mumblecore films that I have seen. middle of the road hipsters unite.

Kurt & Courtney

less about a conspiracy and more about those who knew cobain. The filmmaker himself casts massive doubt on the conspiracy theories and rightly so.

The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery

bad, but better than most crap today.

Magical Mystery Tour

I enjoyed this more than Help!.

Outside Ozona

Cringe inducing dialogue and predictable plot along with some oversimplified politics make for a barely watchable film. It's a shame because it's a decent cast. sherilyn fenn is in this, for all you peakers out there.

popcorn film includes thin plot, big chuckles. john hughes for the ipod generation.

Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari)

I like the transitions between the scenes where a lamp or a ship or a seemingly random image is shown for a few seconds almost as if to say, this too shall pass.

Top Secret!
Top Secret!(1984)

har har har send up of ww2 and elvis flicks.

A Serious Man

Tries too hard. I'd rather watch mumblecore than this crap. Worst Cohen Bros. film ever. Yes, even worse than Burn After Reading.

Dance Party USA

disgusting and tender.

Quiet City
Quiet City(2007)

for how little there is to it, this movie clicked with me.

Nights and Weekends

Spycam cinema. Cassevettes redux.

Kissing on the Mouth

honest effort. Another Joe Swanberg film, Nights and Weekends, is better.

Wendy and Lucy

Wrenching. Like a rolling stone.

Cindy and Donna

weird b-grade film with sexual themes.

Malibu High
Malibu High(1979)

quite terrible, but a great time capsule.

I'm Not There

Cate Blanchett was great in this.

Let the Right One In

It's the Wire of vampire movies. I got sucked in. Word.

True Blood
True Blood(1989)

billy drago is sort of scary in this. it's not that great of a movie actually. if you must see everything that sherilyn fenn is in, then watch it, I suppose.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry

aces. love the back and forth with Mary and Larry.

The Road
The Road(2009)

feel good hit of the nuclear winter.

The Men Who Stare at Goats

only funny bits were ones with animals, and those were too few and too far between. basically it's like a third rate Coen Brothers film. Skip it.

Smokin' Aces
Smokin' Aces(2007)

aside from jason bateman's funny bit, this film is flimsy and full of shit. It's as if the writer decided to knock out a Pulp Fiction type movie in an afternoon.

Public Enemies

straight faced take on the john dillinger legend.

The Brothers Bloom

One of the best recent Wes Anderson films never made.

guy gets inspired, writes a script, schmoozes with hollywood types at bar, and gets lucky enough to get a movie and music deal. Since one thing went his way, he expects the world to begin revolving around his ambitions. Friends get lost in the process. What amazed me is this guy had never directed or written anything, but pulls off making a film on sheer bravado. A great companion piece to the movie,, a documentary about a couple of friends that get caught in the dotcom meltdown.

Rachel Getting Married

ordinary people meets pieces of april. uncomfortable rehab piece - boring, but robyn hitchcock plays at the wedding.
