I was worried that this remake would be at best unnecessary and at worst an insult to the original. Those worries were unfounded as not only does it stack up to the original, it may be one of Disney's best live action films. The effects are breathtaking but the acting is the real achievement. Newcomer Sethie is great as Mowgli and the voice talent is stellar. Bill Murray is sublime as Balbo and Christopher Walken's King Louie as a mix between Don Corleone and Emperor Palpatine is oddly brilliant. This movie is equal parts funny, heartfelt and thrilling. A near perfect example of what big budget filmmaking should be.
The premise appealed to me being a former high school theatre geek. Unfortunately, it's devoid of anything that would make it worth watching. Amateurish may be too good a word to describe the script, acting, and direction.
What starts as a nice tribute to military service dogs falls apart under the weight of its absurd crooked solider/cartel gun smuggling ring storyline.
The central romance is never quite believable but the strong acting, insightful script, and effective ending make up for it in this wannabe Woody Allen romcom.
A throwback to classic 80's Sci-Fi (especially Spielberg) films. The pace may be a slow burn but it still kept me on the edge of my seat. Despite a small budget; the effects, cinematography, and acting are all top notch.
